It was developed by Sei Labs, co-founded in 2021 by Jayendra Jog and Jeffrey (Jeff) Feng. Jog previously served as a lead software engineer at Robinhood, where he worked on KYC processes and built infrastructure components. Feng held roles at Goldman Sachs as a technology investment banker and at Coatue Management as a venture investor, where he worked on investments in companies such as Fireblocks and Alchemy. The project's technical architecture centers on a 'Twin Turbo' consensus mechanism targeting approximately 300-millisecond block finality, and its v2 upgrade in 2024 introduced what Sei Labs described as the first parallelized Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). As of mid-2025, over 270 applications are reported to be deployed across DeFi, gaming, NFT, and infrastructure sectors.","heading":"Project Background and Team","severity":"low","sources":[{"credibility":2,"name":"Jeff Feng: Profile and His Role in Building Sei Network — Indodax Academy","type":"other","url":"https://indodax.com/academy/en/jeff-feng-sei-network-profile/"},{"credibility":1,"name":"Trading-focused blockchain Sei raises $30M, bringing valuation up to $800M — TechCrunch","type":"news_article","url":"https://techcrunch.com/2023/04/11/trading-focused-blockchain-sei-raises-30m-bringing-valuation-up-to-800m/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Sei Network Overview — SimpleSwap","type":"research","url":"https://simpleswap.io/learn/analytics/projects/sei-network-overview"}]},{"content":"Sei Labs raised a $5 million seed round in August 2022, with investors including Multicoin Capital, Coinbase Ventures, Delphi Digital, Hudson River Trading, GSR, Hypersphere, and Flow Traders. In April 2023, the company announced a $30 million raise — described as a Series A — at an $800 million post-money valuation. Investors in that round included Jump Crypto, Distributed Global, Multicoin Capital, Asymmetric Capital Partners, Flow Traders, Hypersphere Ventures, and Bixin Ventures. Sei Labs also launched a $50 million ecosystem and liquidity fund in September 2022. The participation of Jump Crypto is noted as a risk factor given Jump Crypto's own reputational exposure from its involvement in the Terra/Luna collapse in 2022, though no direct linkage to Sei's operations has been established.","heading":"Funding and Investor Base","severity":"low","sources":[{"credibility":1,"name":"Trading-focused blockchain Sei raises $30M — TechCrunch","type":"news_article","url":"https://techcrunch.com/2023/04/11/trading-focused-blockchain-sei-raises-30m-bringing-valuation-up-to-800m/"},{"credibility":1,"name":"Sei Labs Raises $30M for Trading-Focused Layer 1 Blockchain — CoinDesk","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.coindesk.com/business/2023/04/11/sei-labs-raises-30m-for-trading-focused-layer-1-blockchain"},{"credibility":1,"name":"Sei Network developer raising funds at $400 million token valuation — The Block","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.theblock.co/post/213461/sei-network-developer-raising-funds-at-400-million-token-valuation-sources"}]},{"content":"The SEI token launched in August 2023 with a fixed maximum supply of 10 billion tokens. The initial distribution allocates 48% to an ecosystem reserve, 20% to private sale investors subject to vesting, 20% to the team subject to vesting, 9% to the Sei Foundation treasury, and 3% to a Binance Launchpool. Combined insider and investor allocations represent 40% of total supply, which critics have characterized as concentrated. Token unlock events began intensifying in late 2024 as one-year vesting cliffs for the team and private investors expired, with monthly unlocks during peak periods reportedly reaching between 150 million and 200 million tokens. Private investors in the seed round (at $0.005 per token) and private round (at $0.04 per token) achieved nominal return multiples of 135x and approximately 17x respectively relative to mid-2024 market prices, creating significant potential sell pressure. Critics have also noted that inflationary staking rewards dilute non-stakers and that the large ecosystem reserve presents governance risk if token releases are poorly timed or used to subsidize artificial activity.","heading":"Token Distribution and Insider Allocation Concerns","severity":"medium","sources":[{"credibility":2,"name":"Sei Tokenomics Are More Complicated Than They Seem — Crypto News Navigator","type":"research","url":"https://www.cryptonewsnavigator.com/academy/article/sei-tokenomics-distribution-and-dilution"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Sei (SEI) Token Unlocks and Vesting: Schedule and Tokenomics — CryptoRank","type":"research","url":"https://cryptorank.io/price/sei-network/vesting"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Sei's Future-Proofed Tokenomics — Sei Official Blog","type":"official","url":"https://blog.sei.io/seis-future-proofed-tokenomics-setting-the-scene-sei-is-an-open-source-permissionless-layer-1-blockchain-specifically-designed-in-response-to-the-fundamental-use-case-of-blockchains-the/"}]},{"content":"At the time of Sei Network's mainnet launch in August 2023, community members reported that the project's earlier communications indicated airdrop claims would be available at the moment of mainnet launch. When the network went live, claims were not immediately accessible; Sei representatives subsequently clarified via an official post on X (formerly Twitter) that tokens would only become claimable after an unspecified 'warmup' period. The hashtag '#SeiScam' trended on X among a subset of disgruntled participants. User complaints centered on: (1) changes to airdrop eligibility criteria that were made without advance notice; (2) alleged favoritism toward large fund-bridgers ('whale behavior') over diligent testnet participants; and (3) technical issues with the Wormhole bridge reaching its daily limit, preventing users from moving assets off-chain after claiming. CoinDesk reported on the frustration at launch as 'mounting.' The Sei Foundation publicly acknowledged the bridge issue and attributed it to the Wormhole daily cap. No evidence was found of fraudulent conduct meeting a legal threshold; the backlash appears to reflect community dissatisfaction with communication and reward distribution decisions rather than misappropriation of funds.","heading":"Airdrop Controversy and Community Backlash (2023)","severity":"medium","sources":[{"credibility":1,"name":"Sei, Blockchain Designed for Trading, Goes Live but 'Frustration' Mounts Over Airdrop — CoinDesk","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.coindesk.com/tech/2023/08/16/sei-blockchain-designed-for-trading-goes-live-but-frustration-mounts-over-airdrop"},{"credibility":2,"name":"SEI Crypto Token: Scam Accusations Explored — Bitcoinist","type":"news_article","url":"https://bitcoinist.com/sei-crypto-token-scam-accusations-explored/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Farmers complain of barren fields after Sei airdrop — Blockworks","type":"news_article","url":"https://blockworks.co/news/sei-airdrop-farmers"},{"credibility":3,"name":"Sei and Sui Airdrop Controversy: A Deeper Dive — Suipiens","type":"other","url":"https://suipiens.com/blog/sei-and-sui-airdrop-controversy-a-deeper-dive/"}]},{"content":"Prior to production deployment in April 2024, two significant vulnerabilities were discovered in Sei's codebase and disclosed through its bug bounty program. The first bug had the potential to halt the chain by triggering an ABCI panic. The second, more severe, bug could allegedly allow an attacker to freely transfer funds out of any account without authorization. The Sei Foundation awarded $2,000,000 for the disclosure of the fund-transfer vulnerability and $75,000 for the chain-halt vulnerability. Neither vulnerability was exploited in production; both were reportedly addressed before deployment. The project had also undergone formal security audits: CertiK conducted a protocol security assessment in July 2023, and Oak Security conducted a Sei Chain and CosmWasm audit in May 2023. A Nakamoto coefficient of approximately 7 has been reported, meaning that coordinated action by as few as 7 validators could theoretically influence or compromise the network. This figure compares unfavorably to more mature Layer 1 networks. The low coefficient is attributed in part to Sei's early-stage validator ecosystem and the concentration of staked tokens among large delegators. The project has not publicly committed to a specific target Nakamoto coefficient or timeline for improving validator diversity as of this writing.","heading":"Decentralization and Validator Concentration","severity":"medium","sources":[{"credibility":2,"name":"Sei Network Review 2026: Solana Killer? — Coin Bureau","type":"research","url":"https://coinbureau.com/review/sei-network-review"},{"credibility":3,"name":"Sei Network Research Report — BlockPulse on Medium","type":"research","url":"https://medium.com/@BlockPulse_Web3/sei-network-research-report-the-pioneer-of-parallel-evm-and-a-network-on-the-verge-of-ecosystem-4cfe6b5cf7b9"}]},{"content":"In May 2025, Sei Labs submitted SIP-3, a governance proposal to deprecate CosmWasm smart contracts and native Cosmos-based transactions in favor of an EVM-only architecture. The proposal was approved by the Sei community. Under the approved transition timeline, inbound IBC transfers were disabled in a February 2026 release, the native oracle was removed in March 2026, and Cosmos stack functionality — including CosmWasm contracts, IBC interoperability, and native bech32 addresses — was disabled on April 6, 2026. This migration required CosmWasm developers to migrate applications to the EVM and required users holding assets in Cosmos-native wallets to migrate to EVM wallets. The Block reported on community deliberation around the proposal. This architectural shift, while potentially improving performance, carries transition risk for existing users and developers who may not migrate in time, and has the effect of breaking backward compatibility with previously deployed CosmWasm contracts.","heading":"Architecture Transition Risk (SIP-3: Cosmos Deprecation)","severity":"medium","sources":[{"credibility":1,"name":"Sei community weighs proposal to deprecate native Cosmos accounts, move to EVM-only model — The Block","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.theblock.co/post/353610/sei-community-weighs-evm-only-proposal-deprecate-cosmos-functionality"},{"credibility":1,"name":"Why Sei Wants to Cut Cosmos Compatibility, Go All-In on Ethereum — CoinDesk","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.coindesk.com/tech/2025/05/08/sei-wants-to-cut-cosmos-compatibility-and-go-all-in-on-ethereum"},{"credibility":2,"name":"SIP-3: Deprecating CosmWasm & Cosmos — GitHub Discussion","type":"official","url":"https://github.com/sei-protocol/sips/discussions/9"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Sei sets mid-2026 deadline to become EVM-only — MEXC News","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.mexc.com/news/498121"}]},{"content":"As of the date of this report, no regulatory enforcement actions — including from the SEC, CFTC, or DOJ — have been brought against Sei Labs, the Sei Foundation, or the SEI token. Canary Capital also filed a proposal for a SEI ETF. These filings reflect institutional interest but do not constitute regulatory approval or endorsement of the underlying asset. How verification works. The “Row integrity” check above is computed in your browser — your machine recomputes the SHA-256 of the canonical bytes and compares against the stored hash. No avoid.net server can fake that check. The “full verify” link goes one level deeper: your browser fetches the on-chain transaction from a Solana RPC node and confirms the same hash is in the memo. If you don’t want to trust either avoid.net or the public RPC, run the CLI verifier on your own machine — python -m src.verify_decision <event_id>.
