The maximum statutory penalty is five years imprisonment. Simultaneously, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filed a parallel civil fraud complaint (Litigation Release No. LR-25933) alleging that Lee and co-defendant Brenda Chunga (aka 'Bitcoin Beautee') promoted HyperFund membership packages while knowing or being reckless in not knowing that HyperFund was a pyramid scheme with no legitimate revenue source other than new investor deposits. The SEC estimates investor losses at $1.7 billion; DOJ prosecutors place the figure at $1.89 billion. Judge Richard D. According to court filings and DOJ press releases, the scheme falsely claimed these returns were derived from large-scale cryptocurrency mining operations. In reality, U.S. authorities allege, no such mining operations existed and investor withdrawals were paid using funds from newer investors — the classic hallmark of a Ponzi scheme. Beginning in at least July 2021, HyperFund allegedly began blocking investor withdrawals, and the platform ultimately collapsed in 2022. Chainalysis ranked HyperVerse as the single largest cryptocurrency scam of 2022, initially estimating global investor losses at approximately $1.3 billion before U.S. authorities revised the total upward to $1.89 billion.","heading":"Alleged Scheme Mechanics","severity":"critical","sources":[{"credibility":1,"name":"DOJ: Three Individuals Charged in $1.89B Cryptocurrency Fraud Scheme","type":"regulatory","url":"https://www.justice.gov/criminal/case/hyperfund-and-associated-cases"},{"credibility":1,"name":"SEC Civil Complaint: Xue Samuel Lee and Brenda Indah Chunga","type":"court_filing","url":"https://www.sec.gov/files/litigation/complaints/2024/comp-pr2024-11.pdf"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Finance Magnates: HyperFund US Authorities Bust $1.9 Billion Crypto Ponzi Scheme","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.financemagnates.com/cryptocurrency/hyperfund-us-authorities-bust-19-billion-crypto-ponzi-scheme/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Chainalysis: Crypto Scam Revenue 2022 Report","type":"research","url":"https://www.chainalysis.com/blog/2022-crypto-scam-revenue/"}]},{"content":"HyperFund underwent a series of rebrands designed to maintain investor confidence and recruit new participants. In December 2021, at the height of the metaverse hype cycle, the platform rebranded as HyperVerse. In late May 2022 it rebranded again as HyperNation. The broader brand portfolio operated under HyperTech, HyperCapital, HyperCommunity, and HyperFund over the life of the scheme. At the HyperVerse launch event in December 2021, organizers introduced a figure named 'Steven Reece Lewis' as the company's CEO, presenting fabricated credentials including degrees from the University of Leeds and University of Cambridge, prior employment at Goldman Sachs, and a claim of having sold a company to Adobe. Subsequent investigations revealed that 'Steven Reece Lewis' was a fictional persona. The individual who portrayed him was Stephen Harrison, a British TV presenter living in Thailand, who was paid approximately $5,000 and a new suit to deliver a speech at the event. Harrison later publicly apologized, stating he did not know the full nature of the role. Brenda Chunga (aka 'Bitcoin Beautee') of Severna Park, Maryland, served as a top promoter who personally received at least $3.7 million in proceeds, which she spent on a BMW, designer clothing, a $1.2 million Maryland home, and a $1.1 million Dubai condo. Chunga pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit securities fraud and wire fraud; her sentencing is scheduled for January 7, 2027. Rodney Burton (aka 'Bitcoin Rodney') of Miami, Florida, also served as a key promoter and pleaded guilty on June 15, 2026, to conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money transmitting business. Burton admitted to personally receiving at least $7.85 million from HyperFund investors; his sentencing is set for July 23, 2026. The company went into voluntary administration in October 2021 owing creditors an estimated AUD $58 million. Lee was once described in Australian media as 'the crown prince of Bitcoin.' Following a Guardian Australia investigation that identified links between Blockchain Global directors and the HyperVerse scheme, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) opened a formal probe into the collapsed firm. In October 2024, UAE authorities detained Lee at Dubai's Al Aweer Central Prison following an Interpol Red Notice; he was held for approximately 60 days before being released. The U.S. has no extradition treaty with the UAE, though Australia does maintain an extradition arrangement with the UAE, which could theoretically facilitate transfer to Australian jurisdiction should Australian authorities pursue criminal proceedings. On November 5, 2024, the SEC confirmed it had successfully served Lee with the civil fraud complaint while he was imprisoned. In a Bloomberg video interview published in early 2025, Lee denied the charges and maintained his innocence, stating that any misuse of HyperVerse funds must have been conducted by others. Lee's U.S. criminal case (24-CR-21) remains pending. The June 15, 2026 guilty plea by co-promoter Rodney Burton legally corroborates the scheme's core mechanics as described by prosecutors.","heading":"Current Legal Status and Fugitive Situation","severity":"critical","sources":[{"credibility":2,"name":"BusinessForHome: HyperFund Co-Founder Sam Lee Arrested In Dubai For $1.8 Billion Fraud","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.businessforhome.org/2024/11/hyperfund-co-founder-sam-lee-arrested-in-dubai-for-1-8-billion-fraud/"},{"credibility":3,"name":"BehindMLM: Sam Lee detained in Dubai on Interpol arrest warrant","type":"news_article","url":"https://behindmlm.com/companies/hyperfund/sam-lee-detained-in-dubai-on-interpol-arrest-warrant/"},{"credibility":1,"name":"Bloomberg: Dubai's Billion-Dollar Crypto Underworld","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.bloomberg.com/news/videos/2025-03-10/dubai-s-billion-dollar-crypto-underworld"},{"credibility":1,"name":"DOJ: HyperFund and Associated Cases — current docket","type":"regulatory","url":"https://www.justice.gov/criminal/case/hyperfund-and-associated-cases"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Crypto Briefing: Rodney Burton guilty plea June 2026","type":"news_article","url":"https://cryptobriefing.com/rodney-burton-guilty-hyperfund-crypto-fraud/"}]}],"sources_used":[{"credibility":1,"name":"DOJ: HyperFund and Associated Cases","type":"regulatory","url":"https://www.justice.gov/criminal/case/hyperfund-and-associated-cases"},{"credibility":1,"name":"SEC Press Release 2024-11: SEC Charges Founder of $1.7 Billion HyperFund Crypto Pyramid Scheme","type":"regulatory","url":"https://www.sec.gov/newsroom/press-releases/2024-11"},{"credibility":1,"name":"SEC Civil Complaint: Xue Samuel Lee and Brenda Indah Chunga","type":"court_filing","url":"https://www.sec.gov/files/litigation/complaints/2024/comp-pr2024-11.pdf"},{"credibility":1,"name":"SEC Litigation Release LR-25933","type":"regulatory","url":"https://www.sec.gov/enforcement-litigation/litigation-releases/lr-25933"},{"credibility":1,"name":"CNBC: DOJ and SEC unveil charges in $1.9 billion HyperFund cryptocurrency fraud","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.cnbc.com/2024/01/29/doj-and-sec-unveil-charges-in-1point9-billion-cryptocurrency-fraud-scheme.html"},{"credibility":2,"name":"CoinDesk: HyperVerse's Alleged Ponzi Scheme Raked in Nearly $2B, Hired Actor as Fake CEO","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.coindesk.com/policy/2024/01/29/hyperverses-alleged-ponzi-scheme-raked-in-nearly-2b-hired-actor-as-fake-ceo"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Crypto Briefing: Florida man Rodney Burton pleads guilty in $1.89B HyperFund crypto fraud scheme","type":"news_article","url":"https://cryptobriefing.com/rodney-burton-guilty-hyperfund-crypto-fraud/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Finance Magnates: HyperFund US Authorities Bust $1.9 Billion Crypto Ponzi Scheme","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.financemagnates.com/cryptocurrency/hyperfund-us-authorities-bust-19-billion-crypto-ponzi-scheme/"},{"credibility":1,"name":"Bloomberg: Dubai's Billion-Dollar Crypto Underworld (video)","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.bloomberg.com/news/videos/2025-03-10/dubai-s-billion-dollar-crypto-underworld"},{"credibility":1,"name":"Fortune: The CEO of failed crypto firm HyperVerse boasted an extraordinary resume. How verification works. The “Row integrity” check above is computed in your browser — your machine recomputes the SHA-256 of the canonical bytes and compares against the stored hash. No avoid.net server can fake that check. The “full verify” link goes one level deeper: your browser fetches the on-chain transaction from a Solana RPC node and confirms the same hash is in the memo. If you don’t want to trust either avoid.net or the public RPC, run the CLI verifier on your own machine — python -m src.verify_decision <event_id>.
