Audit log

Every state-changing event for AscendEX Exchange: moderation decisions on community submissions, plus corrections and updates from the news pipeline. URL-based decisions are designed to carry three independent witnesses — the original source, an Internet Archive snapshot, and a Solana memo signed by our publicly-disclosed publisher key. Archive coverage is still being backfilled, so each decision below reports its own snapshot status rather than assuming one exists.

On July 6, 2026, the exchange issued an official notice to retail account holders announcing that all automated withdrawals were paused and that every withdrawal request would be subject to manual review. The manual review process includes identity and KYC verification, sanctions and fraud checks, asset and balance reconciliation, and network availability checks. The exchange explicitly stated it is 'not in a position to give assurances about timing or amounts today.' The notice further warned that some withdrawals may be delayed, face additional checks, or be rejected. The exchange acknowledged that if any formal insolvency or similar process is commenced, the treatment of unresolved balances or claims may be subject to that process. As of the time of reporting, no formal insolvency proceedings had been announced. Users were no longer permitted to open accounts, deposit, trade, swap, stake, or lend; access was restricted to offboarding tasks such as withdrawal requests, KYC updates, and transaction-history exports.","heading":"Platform Shutdown and Withdrawal Freeze (2026)","severity":"critical","sources":[{"credibility":2,"name":"AscendEX Halts Operations, Freezes Automated Withdrawals — The Defiant","type":"news_article","url":"https://thedefiant.io/news/cefi/ascendex-halts-operations-freezes-automated-withdrawals"},{"credibility":2,"name":"AscendEX shuts down after MiCA miss and warns some withdrawals may not be processed — CryptoSlate","type":"news_article","url":"https://cryptoslate.com/ascendex-shuts-down-after-mica-miss-and-warns-some-withdrawals-may-not-be-processed/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"AscendEX shuts down, says users may not recover full crypto balances — crypto.news","type":"news_article","url":"https://crypto.news/ascendex-shuts-down-says-users-may-not-recover-full-crypto-balances/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Crypto Exchange AscendEX Halts All Operations, Offers No Guarantees On Customer Fund Withdrawals — Crowdfund Insider","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.crowdfundinsider.com/2026/07/290550-crypto-exchange-ascendex-halts-all-operations-offers-no-guarantees-on-customer-fund-withdrawals/"}]},{"content":"AscendEX attributed its shutdown to two primary factors. First, the exchange did not hold authorization under the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation, which came into full effect on July 1, 2026, making it unlawful for unauthorized providers to continue serving EU clients after that date. Second, the exchange disclosed that it had relied on an undisclosed strategic transaction to provide liquidity: 'We relied on an agreed strategic transaction that was to provide liquidity to grow the platform, and the counterparty did not perform.' The identity of the counterparty and the terms of the transaction were not disclosed in the official announcement. ESMA had issued a public statement in June 2026 instructing unauthorized crypto-asset service providers to cease onboarding EU clients after July 1 while maintaining orderly exit services. AscendEX's collapse was subsequently noted as an early real-world test of MiCA's enforcement landscape.","heading":"Stated Reasons for Closure: MiCA Non-Compliance and Failed Liquidity Transaction","severity":"critical","sources":[{"credibility":2,"name":"AscendEX shuts down, says users may not recover full crypto balances — crypto.news","type":"news_article","url":"https://crypto.news/ascendex-shuts-down-says-users-may-not-recover-full-crypto-balances/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"AscendEX Exchange Collapse Hands Europe Its First MiCA Test — BeInCrypto","type":"news_article","url":"https://beincrypto.com/esma-mica-crypto-custody-review/"},{"credibility":1,"name":"ESMA Public Statement — MiCA transitional period ends (June 2026)","type":"regulatory","url":"https://www.esma.europa.eu/sites/default/files/2026-06/ESMA75-113276571-1710_Public_Statement_MiCA_transitional_period_ends.pdf"},{"credibility":2,"name":"AscendEX Froze Withdrawals and May Not Return User Funds After MiCA Miss — TechTimes","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.techtimes.com/articles/320217/20260712/ascendex-froze-withdrawals-may-not-return-user-funds-after-mica-miss.htm"}]},{"content":"On June 26, 2026, on-chain investigator ZachXBT publicly warned that AscendEX's hot wallets were critically depleted of major liquid assets including ETH, USDT, USDC, and SOL. According to ZachXBT's analysis, which was corroborated by data from Arkham and TRM, AscendEX-labeled wallet addresses held approximately $13.5 million in crypto at the time of warning, but over $12 million of that consisted of the exchange's own ASD token and Unbound Science's UNITE token — neither of which is a widely liquid asset — leaving minimal freely tradeable reserves. On-chain records cited by ZachXBT showed that approximately $240 million departed from exchange-linked wallets on June 20, 2026 — six days before his public disclosure — following what appeared to have been a comparable liquidity injection approximately two months prior. After that injection, reserves had stabilized near $50 million before the June 20 outflow. ZachXBT also reported that withdrawals were still not being processed as of July 2, while deposits were still being accepted. By July 8, he stated that verified user loss claims had reached into the millions of dollars. ZachXBT urged affected users to report the matter to law enforcement and regulatory agencies in their respective jurisdictions and called on users to hold the co-founder accountable. These on-chain findings are attributed to ZachXBT and have not been independently verified by a court or regulator as of this writing.","heading":"On-Chain Evidence: Near-Empty Hot Wallets and $240 Million Outflow","severity":"critical","sources":[{"credibility":2,"name":"AscendEx shutdown: Uncertainty over withdrawals as hot wallets lack funds — Protos","type":"on_chain","url":"https://protos.com/ascendex-shutdown-uncertainty-over-withdrawals-as-hot-wallets-lack-funds/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"ZachXBT warns AscendEX may face liquidity issues as withdrawals stall — crypto.news","type":"news_article","url":"https://crypto.news/zachxbt-warns-ascendex-may-face-liquidity-issues-as-withdrawals-stall/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"ZachXBT raises liquidity alarm as AscendEX users report withdrawal issues — Cryptopolitan","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.cryptopolitan.com/ascendex-users-report-withdrawal-issues/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"AscendEX ceases operations after ZachXBT warning on withdrawals — Crypto Briefing","type":"news_article","url":"https://cryptobriefing.com/ascendex-ceases-operations-zachxbt-warning/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"AscendEX Shuts Down as Withdrawals Are Delayed and Reserves Appear Nearly Empty — Incrypted","type":"news_article","url":"https://incrypted.com/en/ascendex-shuts-down-withdrawals-are-delayed-and-reserves-appear-nearly-empty/"}]},{"content":"AscendEX was co-founded by Dr. George Cao (also referred to in some sources as Dr. Jing Cao), who served as CEO, and Ariel Ling, co-founder and COO. Following the withdrawal freeze and shutdown announcement, multiple reports indicated that co-founder George Cao did not issue any public statement. The platform's official social media accounts were reported as inactive. ZachXBT called on users to hold the co-founder responsible, though no formal legal proceedings against named individuals had been reported as of this writing. Assets stolen spanned the Ethereum, Binance Smart Chain, Polygon, Litecoin, and Bitcoin Cash networks. Ethereum-denominated tokens accounted for over $60 million of the total loss. The breach was attributed by some researchers to North Korea's Lazarus Group, though this attribution was not officially confirmed by law enforcement at the time. AscendEX pledged full reimbursement to affected users and stated that its cold wallet remained untouched. The exchange subsequently deployed new hot wallet infrastructure including multi-signature controls, two-factor authentication, and a policy of storing 90% of assets in cold storage. How verification works. The “Row integrity” check above is computed in your browser — your machine recomputes the SHA-256 of the canonical bytes and compares against the stored hash. No avoid.net server can fake that check. The “full verify” link goes one level deeper: your browser fetches the on-chain transaction from a Solana RPC node and confirms the same hash is in the memo. If you don’t want to trust either avoid.net or the public RPC, run the CLI verifier on your own machine — python -m src.verify_decision <event_id>.
