Verify a decision
Every moderation decision on AVOID.NET is anchored to the Solana blockchain. You don't have to trust us — you can verify cryptographically that we committed to a verdict at a specific moment and have not rewritten it.
How verification works
- We commit. When a moderator accepts/rejects a submission, we serialize the decision into deterministic UTF-8 bytes (
payload_canonical_string), hash it with SHA-256, encode the digest as base58, and write it to Solana inside an SPL Memo v2 transaction. - We store the bytes. The exact bytes we hashed are stored alongside the decision in our database. Anyone can read them and recompute the hash in any language.
- You compare three values. Database hash, your independently-recomputed hash, and the hash inside the on-chain memo. If all three match, the decision is authentic and timestamped.
The on-chain memo format is
AVOID.NET|v1|h:<b58-sha256>|d:<id>|t:<iso>Find a signature on any investigation page's decision log, or run python -m src.verify_decision --signature <sig> for a CLI check.

The attacker drained approximately 3.6 million ETH (worth roughly $60 million at the time) using a recursive call attack that repeatedly requested withdrawals before the contract could update its internal balance. The Ethereum community responded by executing a contentious hard fork on July 20, 2016, at block 192,000, which effectively rewrote the Ethereum ledger to return funds to investors. A minority faction that opposed the fork on grounds of blockchain immutability continued operating the pre-fork chain, which became Ethereum Classic (ETC). The attacker retained the stolen tokens on the Ethereum Classic chain, valued at approximately $8.5 million in ETC. The DAO incident is widely cited as the catalyst for making smart-contract security a priority in the industry and established a precedent for governance-level intervention in response to exploits. On May 23, 2024, the SEC approved 19b-4 rule changes permitting the listing and trading of eight spot Ethereum ETFs, including products from BlackRock, Fidelity, Grayscale, Bitwise, VanEck, ARK 21Shares, Invesco Galaxy, and Franklin Templeton. Trading commenced in July 2024. By early 2026, spot Ether ETFs had logged positive net flows in nine of twelve months, totaling just under $10 billion in aggregate inflows, with institutional products holding approximately 3.77 million ETH. On March 17, 2026, the SEC and CFTC jointly published a 68-page interpretive release formally classifying 16 major cryptocurrencies as digital commodities; while Ethereum was not explicitly named in that release, the prior ETF approvals established de facto commodity status for ETH. BlackRock's ETHB staking ETF launched on March 12, 2026. This marked the first time a non-custodial smart contract was sanctioned under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). The sanctions had an immediate chilling effect on Ethereum's MEV-Boost infrastructure: approximately 72% of blocks produced via MEV-Boost were classified as 'OFAC-compliant' (i.e., excluding Tornado Cash transactions) within months, raising concerns about Ethereum's censorship resistance. The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals reversed the sanctions against Tornado Cash's immutable smart contracts in November 2024, finding OFAC had exceeded its statutory authority. OFAC formally lifted the sanctions on March 21, 2025. The Ethereum Foundation separately pledged $500,000 to fund Tornado Cash developer Roman Storm's legal defense following his conviction on one of three federal charges. The episode exposed a structural vulnerability in Ethereum's block-building pipeline whereby regulatory pressure on a small number of centralized MEV relay operators could functionally censor the network.","heading":"Tornado Cash Sanctions and Censorship Controversy","severity":"medium","sources":[{"credibility":1,"name":"U.S. Treasury Sanctions Notorious Virtual Currency Mixer Tornado Cash | U.S. Treasury","type":"regulatory","url":"https://home.treasury.gov/news/press-releases/jy0916"},{"credibility":2,"name":"A Legal Whirlwind Settles: Treasury Lifts Sanctions on Tornado Cash | Venable LLP","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.venable.com/insights/publications/2025/04/a-legal-whirlwind-settles-treasury-lifts-sanctions"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Ethereum's Censorship Problem Is Getting Worse | CoinDesk","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.coindesk.com/tech/2023/12/06/ethereums-censorship-problem-is-getting-worse"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Ethereum Foundation Backs Tornado Cash Developer with $500K Legal Defense Fund | MEXC News","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.mexc.com/news/ethereum-foundation-backs-tornado-cash-developer-with-500k-legal-defense-fund/64262"},{"credibility":1,"name":"Regulating Decentralized Systems: Evidence from Sanctions on Tornado Cash | NY Federal Reserve","type":"research","url":"https://www.newyorkfed.org/medialibrary/media/research/staff_reports/sr1112.pdf"}]},{"content":"Following Ethereum's transition to proof-of-stake in September 2022, centralization concerns emerged in two areas: liquid staking dominance and maximal extractable value (MEV) infrastructure concentration. Liquid staking protocol Lido reached approximately 32.3% of all staked ETH by late 2023, approaching the critical 33% threshold at which a single entity could theoretically delay or manipulate finality. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin publicly recommended that staking pools cap their share at 15%. Lido's market share subsequently declined to approximately 24% by mid-2024, aided by competition from restaking protocols and the Pectra upgrade's staking reforms. On the MEV side, post-Merge analysis found that the top three block builders held approximately 85.9% of the market, a Herfindahl index 2.5 times more concentrated than pre-Merge mining. This concentration creates a vector for censorship or manipulation via MEV-Boost relay infrastructure. Major liquid staking operators including Lido and Coinbase are incorporated in the United States, creating regulatory exposure that could compel censorship-compliant block production.
