Verify a decision

Every moderation decision on AVOID.NET is anchored to the Solana blockchain. You don't have to trust us — you can verify cryptographically that we committed to a verdict at a specific moment and have not rewritten it.

How verification works

  1. We commit. When a moderator accepts/rejects a submission, we serialize the decision into deterministic UTF-8 bytes (payload_canonical_string), hash it with SHA-256, encode the digest as base58, and write it to Solana inside an SPL Memo v2 transaction.
  2. We store the bytes. The exact bytes we hashed are stored alongside the decision in our database. Anyone can read them and recompute the hash in any language.
  3. You compare three values. Database hash, your independently-recomputed hash, and the hash inside the on-chain memo. If all three match, the decision is authentic and timestamped.
The on-chain memo format is AVOID.NET|v1|h:<b58-sha256>|d:<id>|t:<iso>

Find a signature on any investigation page's decision log, or run python -m src.verify_decision --signature <sig> for a CLI check.

Approximately 7,750 NFTs were sold, raising roughly $70 million USD in under ten minutes. The project had been heavily marketed as a AAA-quality, Pokemon-inspired open-world game, with promotional concept art and a short demo video shown by founder 'Syber' in late 2021. Buyers purchased NFTs without having seen the actual in-game or on-chain artwork, relying entirely on the promotional material. The mint represented one of the largest NFT fundraises up to that point in early 2022.","heading":"The February 2022 Mint","severity":"high","sources":[{"credibility":2,"name":"$70 Million Later, Pixelmon's Founder Calls Artwork Reveal 'Horrible Mistake' — Decrypt","type":"news_article","url":"https://decrypt.co/93964/70-million-pixelmon-founder-calls-artwork-reveal-horrible-mistake"},{"credibility":2,"name":"NFT Buyers Furious After Art They Spent $70 Million on Turned Out to Be Completely Hideous — Futurism","type":"news_article","url":"https://futurism.com/the-byte/pixelmon-nft-scam"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Pixelmon raises $70 million only to reveal hilariously bad NFTs — Web3 Is Going Great","type":"community_report","url":"https://www.web3isgoinggreat.com/?id=2022-02-25-3"}]},{"content":"The Pixelmon metadata reveal ('Hatching') took place on approximately February 25, 2022, and was immediately met with widespread ridicule. The revealed 3D models bore no meaningful resemblance to the high-quality concept art shown during the sale. Creatures appeared with severe rendering errors: some were partially buried in the ground, others displayed only an empty patch of grass with no model at all. Critics noted that many of the models appeared to be stock assets purchased from the Unity asset store — specifically from MeshTint Studio — and converted to voxel format, rather than original creations. One character, a malformed frog-like creature that came to be nicknamed 'Kevin,' became an internet meme and the de facto symbol of the project's failure. The floor price dropped from 3 ETH to approximately 0.3 ETH within 24 hours of the reveal, representing a decline of roughly 90%. Syber issued a public statement on Discord acknowledging 'we made a horrible mistake,' and separately stated on Twitter that the OpenSea reveal was not representative of final in-game assets.","heading":"The Art Reveal Controversy","severity":"critical","sources":[{"credibility":1,"name":"Pixelmon NFT Reveal Disappoints With Hilariously Ugly Art — CoinDesk","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2022/02/28/pixelmon-nft-reveal-disappoints-with-hilariously-ugly-art"},{"credibility":1,"name":"NFT horror: Pixelmon investors lose millions on disfigured Pokemon clones — Fast Company","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.fastcompany.com/90726569/nft-horror-pixelmon-investors-lose-disfigured-pokemon-clones"},{"credibility":2,"name":"\"Worst NFT Project Ever\" Pixelmon Earns $70 Million — Highsnobiety","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.highsnobiety.com/p/pixelmon-nft-project-kevin-meme/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Hype, Bad Art, Deception: Pixelmon's $70M NFT Rug Unpacked — Crypto Briefing","type":"news_article","url":"https://cryptobriefing.com/hype-bad-art-deception-pixelmons-70m-rug-unpacked/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"We Need To Talk About Kevin: PixelMon's Ugliest NFT Gets Star Status — NFT Evening","type":"news_article","url":"https://nftevening.com/we-need-to-talk-about-kevin/"}]},{"content":"Syber was subsequently identified as Martin van Blerk, reported to be 20 or 21 years old at the time and based in Hamilton, New Zealand. Investigative reporting revealed that van Blerk had previously run multiple crowdfunding campaigns on Kickstarter that had failed to deliver on commitments to backers. A card game called 'Psycho Chickens' attracted numerous complaints from backers who alleged they never received their products. A second campaign, 'Slap the Deck,' allegedly reached its funding goal but van Blerk publicly acknowledged he had underestimated the required budget by a factor of five. Separately, a third project called 'Altar Watches' was reported to have delivered. Community members interpreted this as misappropriation of mint proceeds at a time when holders were demanding refunds or substantive development updates. Van Blerk addressed the purchases by stating the team had bought during a market dip as an investment, and separately claimed the team had received 'less than 5% of the funds raised,' though no official financial breakdown or third-party audit was published to corroborate this claim. The new team expanded to approximately 50 members, reportedly including former employees of Riot Games, Ubisoft, Blizzard Entertainment, and Garena. The original voxel artwork was substantially redesigned, with models replaced by smoother 3D characters; the 'Kevin' character was retained in a minimally modified form, with the project leaning into its meme status rather than eliminating it. The play-to-earn model was scrapped in favor of a free-to-play approach, and a 'Right-of-Game' (RoG) framework was introduced to decouple NFT ownership from gameplay access. In 2023 and 2024, Pixelmon released several hypercasual games including 'Kevin the Adventurer' on the Base network, which reported approximately 36,000 active players. In 2024 the project secured an $8 million seed round from Animoca Brands, Delphi Digital, Amber Group, Bing Ventures, and Foresight Ventures, with angel participation from figures including Immutable co-founder Robbie Ferguson and Yield Guild Games co-founder Gabby Dizon.","heading":"LiquidX Acquisition and Relaunch","severity":"medium","sources":[{"credibility":2,"name":"NFT Game Pixelmon Attempts Comeback After $70M 'Horrible' Art Reveal — Decrypt","type":"news_article","url":"https://decrypt.co/110542/nft-game-pixelmon-attempts-comeback-after-70m-horrible-art-reveal"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Pixelmon Has New Leadership. Claiming began on May 27, 2024, with over 180,000 wallets reportedly eligible for an airdrop. NFT holders were given presale registration access. The token was described as a mechanism to reward holders who help expand the Pixelmon brand. As of mid-2024, multiple games were in various stages of development under the relaunched brand, including Pixelmon Arena and a mobile RPG titled Hunting Grounds. A 12-episode anime series was announced. Community sentiment remained divided: original 2022 mint holders had sustained substantial financial losses relative to mint price, while newer participants engaged with the brand on its revised premise. The subsequent LiquidX-led relaunch addressed several operational deficiencies and introduced institutional investment and recognizable industry backers, which partially rehabilitates the project's forward-looking profile.
