Verify a decision

Every moderation decision on AVOID.NET is anchored to the Solana blockchain. You don't have to trust us — you can verify cryptographically that we committed to a verdict at a specific moment and have not rewritten it.

How verification works

  1. We commit. When a moderator accepts/rejects a submission, we serialize the decision into deterministic UTF-8 bytes (payload_canonical_string), hash it with SHA-256, encode the digest as base58, and write it to Solana inside an SPL Memo v2 transaction.
  2. We store the bytes. The exact bytes we hashed are stored alongside the decision in our database. Anyone can read them and recompute the hash in any language.
  3. You compare three values. Database hash, your independently-recomputed hash, and the hash inside the on-chain memo. If all three match, the decision is authentic and timestamped.
The on-chain memo format is AVOID.NET|v1|h:<b58-sha256>|d:<id>|t:<iso>

Find a signature on any investigation page's decision log, or run python -m src.verify_decision --signature <sig> for a CLI check.

Initial reporting put the unauthorized mint at approximately 4 billion ONE tokens, equivalent to roughly 26% of the token's then-existing circulating supply. The ONE price fell approximately 40% within 24 hours of the exploit becoming public. Of the minted tokens, approximately 2.8 billion were moved to attacker-controlled addresses, with an estimated 97% of that amount funneled directly to exchanges, according to on-chain analysis cited in early reporting. Harmony stated it was working with exchanges to freeze attacker-linked funds, paused its token bridge, and pushed an emergency software update while it developed a patch and evaluated rollback options.","heading":"August 2026 Unauthorized Minting Exploit","severity":"critical","sources":[{"credibility":2,"name":"Harmony confirms exploit involving unauthorized minting of 4 billion ONE tokens - The Block","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.theblock.co/news/defi/2026-08-12-harmony-confirms-exploit-one-token-411527"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Harmony's ONE dives 40% after an attack appears to mint tokens equal to quarter of supply - CoinDesk","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2026/08/12/harmony-s-one-falls-26-after-attacker-allegedly-mints-4-billion-tokens"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Harmony Devs Confirm Major Exploit Involving Unauthorized Creation Of ONE Crypto Tokens - Crowdfund Insider","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.crowdfundinsider.com/2026/08/296418-harmony-devs-confirm-major-exploit-involving-unauthorized-creation-of-one-crypto-tokens/"}]},{"content":"The publicly confirmed scope of the exploit grew substantially in the days following the initial disclosure. While the August 12, 2026 confirmation cited approximately 4 billion unauthorized ONE tokens, Harmony's August 17, 2026 rollback announcement disclosed that the attacker had in fact forged approximately 3.01 trillion ONE tokens across six transactions sent to four exploiter-controlled wallets — with nearly 2.4 trillion of that total moved in under two minutes, valued at an estimated $3 billion at pre-attack prices. This is a large discrepancy from the initial ~4 billion figure, and reporting on the exact total forged amount has varied between roughly 2.385 trillion and 3.01 trillion ONE across different outlets; the scale of the incident should be treated as having been understated in the first 24-48 hours and only fully clarified after further forensic review. This escalation itself — from a nine-figure incident to a multi-billion-dollar one within roughly a week — is treated here as a material finding independent of the exact final figure.","heading":"Scale of the Exploit Escalated Sharply During Investigation","severity":"critical","sources":[{"credibility":2,"name":"Harmony plans pre-attack rollback after exploiter forged 3 trillion ONE tokens - The Block","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.theblock.co/news/ecosystems/2026-08-17-harmony-plans-pre-attack-rollback-after-exploiter-forged-3-trillion-one-tokens-411976"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Harmony Will Roll Back Its Blockchain to Erase 3 Trillion Forged Tokens - CoinPaprika","type":"news_article","url":"https://coinpaprika.com/news/harmony-roll-back-blockchain-erase-3-trillion/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Harmony to Roll Back Blockchain to Pre-Attack State After Counterfeit ONE Minting Exploit - CryptoRank.io","type":"news_article","url":"https://cryptorank.io/news/feed/36e8b-harmony-blockchain-rollback-counterfeit-one-attack"}]},{"content":"Rather than burning the forged tokens, blacklisting attacker wallets, or pursuing a token migration, Harmony chose to reset both of its shards to a fixed pre-attack checkpoint. Validators reverted Shard 0 to block 92,730,034 and Shard 1 to block 94,978,278, both corresponding to August 11, 2026 at 23:25:37 UTC, shortly before the first confirmed forged mint. The rollback discarded all subsequent legitimate activity within that window, including an estimated 109,126 regular transactions and 315 staking transactions that had nothing to do with the exploit. Harmony's team defended the choice, stating: \"Of the options we studied, one fixed rollback window is the fairest and most secure. It applies one rule to everyone, removes the forged state, and carries the lowest risk of another attack or consensus failure.\" The decision drew criticism because it required coordinated intervention by the core development team and validators to effectively rewrite recent chain history, which commentators say is in tension with blockchain's foundational claim of immutability and raises questions about how decentralized Harmony's validator set actually is in practice. On-chain investigator ZachXBT publicly stated he would not track the incident for free, reportedly citing Harmony's earlier failure to compensate individuals who helped freeze funds after the 2022 Horizon Bridge hack — criticism that drew both support and pushback but underscored unresolved trust and accountability concerns around the protocol's incident response.","heading":"Full Blockchain Rollback and Immutability Controversy","severity":"critical","sources":[{"credibility":2,"name":"Harmony plans pre-attack rollback after exploiter forged 3 trillion ONE tokens - The Block","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.theblock.co/news/ecosystems/2026-08-17-harmony-plans-pre-attack-rollback-after-exploiter-forged-3-trillion-one-tokens-411976"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Harmony Protocol Plans Network Rollback After Token Forgery Exploit, Raising Blockchain Immutability And Lack Of Decentralization Concerns - Crowdfund Insider","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.crowdfundinsider.com/2026/08/298395-harmony-protocol-plans-network-rollback-after-token-forgery-exploit-raising-blockchain-immutability-and-lack-of-decentralization-concerns/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Harmony to Roll Back Blockchain After Attack Issuing Trillions of ONE - ForkLog","type":"news_article","url":"https://forklog.com/en/harmony-to-roll-back-blockchain-after-attack-issuing-trillions-of-one/"}]},{"content":"On September 6, 2026, less than a month after the exploit, Harmony announced a proposal to fully sunset its Layer 1 blockchain and migrate the native ONE token to Ethereum as an ERC-20 asset. Since our mainnet launch in 2019, our community has been resilient through attacks and changes — but it is time to fully sunset the Harmony network.\" Under the proposal, ONE balances would be captured in a final snapshot and holders, delegators and validators would receive an automatic airdrop of equivalent ERC-20 tokens on Ethereum with no action required and total supply/emission rate unchanged. Harmony also proposed redirecting future token emissions toward a new \"Remix Economy for AI Video\" initiative. A $1.372 million compensation pool, paid in quarterly installments, was proposed for validators who sunset their nodes on schedule, maintain their stakes, sign an agreement, and transition into a new \"governor\" role. In June 2022, Harmony's Horizon Bridge was hacked for approximately $100 million, an attack the FBI later attributed to North Korea's Lazarus Group and APT38 in January 2023; that incident is the subject of a separate, existing AVOID.NET investigation and is referenced here only as background pattern evidence. In December 2023, a bug in Harmony's staking/undelegation logic led to the improper minting of approximately 146.3 million ONE tokens across 74 addresses, with roughly 16.4 million ONE moved to an exchange before Harmony issued an emergency patch and blacklisted the affected addresses.
