Verify a decision

Every moderation decision on AVOID.NET is anchored to the Solana blockchain. You don't have to trust us — you can verify cryptographically that we committed to a verdict at a specific moment and have not rewritten it.

How verification works

  1. We commit. When a moderator accepts/rejects a submission, we serialize the decision into deterministic UTF-8 bytes (payload_canonical_string), hash it with SHA-256, encode the digest as base58, and write it to Solana inside an SPL Memo v2 transaction.
  2. We store the bytes. The exact bytes we hashed are stored alongside the decision in our database. Anyone can read them and recompute the hash in any language.
  3. You compare three values. Database hash, your independently-recomputed hash, and the hash inside the on-chain memo. If all three match, the decision is authentic and timestamped.
The on-chain memo format is AVOID.NET|v1|h:<b58-sha256>|d:<id>|t:<iso>

Find a signature on any investigation page's decision log, or run python -m src.verify_decision --signature <sig> for a CLI check.

On January 30, 2024, the SEC filed a parallel civil complaint against Lee and Chunga, alleging violations of the antifraud provisions of the federal securities laws. The DOJ alleged that the scheme defrauded investors of approximately $1.89 billion; the SEC's complaint characterized the scheme as raising more than $1.7 billion. The scheme represented that these returns would be funded by revenues from large-scale cryptocurrency mining operations. Federal prosecutors and the SEC alleged that no such mining operations existed and that the scheme had no legitimate source of revenue. Investor withdrawals were paid from new investor deposits, consistent with a classic Ponzi structure. The SEC specifically alleged that 'investor withdrawals were paid with new investor deposits.' The scheme also incorporated multilevel-marketing recruitment incentives, paying participants bonuses of 1–15% for recruiting new investors, amplifying its pyramid structure. 'Sam' Lee), age approximately 35, an Australian citizen residing in Dubai, UAE, is alleged to be the co-founder of HyperFund and the principal architect of the scheme. He faces one federal count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud and wire fraud. Lee evaded arrest after the January 2024 indictment and remained at large. In October–November 2024, UAE authorities detained Lee at Dubai's Al Aweer Central Prison, reportedly pursuant to an Interpol Red Notice. He was reportedly detained for approximately 60 days before being released. No formal U.S. extradition proceedings have been confirmed publicly; there is no extradition treaty between the U.S. and the UAE, though Australia — where Lee holds citizenship — does have an extradition arrangement with UAE authorities. As of the date of this report, Lee's whereabouts and precise legal status remain uncertain. Rodney Burton (a.k.a. 'Bitcoin Rodney'), age approximately 54, of Miami, Florida, was arrested at Miami International Airport on January 24, 2024, while allegedly carrying a one-way ticket to the UAE. A federal judge denied bail, ruling he posed an 'extreme flight risk.' A superseding indictment subsequently expanded his charges to 11 federal counts: one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, two counts of wire fraud, seven counts of money laundering, and one count of operating an unlicensed money transmitting business. Conviction on the wire fraud counts would carry a maximum of 20 years per count; money laundering counts carry up to 10 years each. Burton's criminal trial is currently scheduled for September 14, 2026, before Judge Richard D. Bennett in the District of Maryland. Burton has alleged he was duped by Lee. Brenda Chunga (a.k.a. 'Bitcoin Beautee'), of Severna Park, Maryland, entered a guilty plea on December 17, 2023, to one count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud and wire fraud, which carries a maximum five-year prison term. She is alleged to have personally collected more than $3.5–3.7 million through the scheme, spending proceeds on luxury goods and real estate. Her sentencing has been repeatedly postponed and is currently scheduled for June 29, 2026.","heading":"Defendant Profiles and Legal Status","severity":"critical","sources":[{"credibility":1,"name":"DOJ Office of Public Affairs: Three Individuals Charged for Roles in $1.89B Cryptocurrency Fraud Scheme","type":"regulatory","url":"https://www.justice.gov/archives/opa/pr/three-individuals-charged-roles-189b-cryptocurrency-fraud-scheme"},{"credibility":1,"name":"SEC Litigation Release LR-25933: Xue Samuel Lee and Brenda Indah Chunga","type":"regulatory","url":"https://www.sec.gov/enforcement-litigation/litigation-releases/lr-25933"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Cryptopolitan: Bitcoin Rodney hit with expanded charges in $1.8B HyperFund crypto scam","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.cryptopolitan.com/bitcoin-rodney-hit-with-expanded-charges/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"BusinessForHome: HyperFund Co-Founder Sam Lee Arrested In Dubai For $1.8 Billion Fraud","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.businessforhome.org/2024/11/hyperfund-co-founder-sam-lee-arrested-in-dubai-for-1-8-billion-fraud/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"BehindMLM: Brenda Chunga's HyperFund criminal plea deal","type":"news_article","url":"https://behindmlm.com/companies/hyperfund/brenda-chungas-hyperfund-criminal-plea-deal/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"The Block: Bitcoin Rodney faces decades in prison as feds add wire fraud to HyperFund charges","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.theblock.co/post/382450/bitcoin-rodney-faces-decades-in-prison-as-feds-add-wire-fraud-to-hyperfund-charges"},{"credibility":1,"name":"DOJ District of Maryland: Miami Man Indicted on Federal Wire-Fraud Conspiracy Charges","type":"regulatory","url":"https://www.justice.gov/usao-md/pr/miami-man-indicted-federal-wire-fraud-conspiracy-charges"}]},{"content":"When HyperFund rebranded to HyperVerse in late 2021, the scheme presented a man using the name 'Steven Reece Lewis' as its chief executive officer at the HyperVerse launch event. The real individual behind the persona was identified as Stephen Harrison, a British actor and freelance television presenter based in Thailand. Harrison confirmed to The Guardian that he was paid approximately 180,000 Thai baht (roughly AUD $7,500 or GBP £4,000) over nine months, plus a free suit, to portray the CEO role.
