Verify a decision

Every moderation decision on AVOID.NET is anchored to the Solana blockchain. You don't have to trust us — you can verify cryptographically that we committed to a verdict at a specific moment and have not rewritten it.

How verification works

  1. We commit. When a moderator accepts/rejects a submission, we serialize the decision into deterministic UTF-8 bytes (payload_canonical_string), hash it with SHA-256, encode the digest as base58, and write it to Solana inside an SPL Memo v2 transaction.
  2. We store the bytes. The exact bytes we hashed are stored alongside the decision in our database. Anyone can read them and recompute the hash in any language.
  3. You compare three values. Database hash, your independently-recomputed hash, and the hash inside the on-chain memo. If all three match, the decision is authentic and timestamped.
The on-chain memo format is AVOID.NET|v1|h:<b58-sha256>|d:<id>|t:<iso>

Find a signature on any investigation page's decision log, or run python -m src.verify_decision --signature <sig> for a CLI check.

Prospective buyers reportedly included competitor exchanges and payments platform Exodus. The sale process failed for two principal reasons. First, although co-founders Arthur Hayes, Benjamin Delo, and Samuel Reed had stepped away from day-to-day management following U.S. criminal charges brought against them in 2020, they reportedly retained control of a large majority of the company's equity; at least one prospective buyer found this arrangement untenable. Second, BitMEX's trading volumes continued to decline throughout the sale talks, with monthly futures volume falling from over $100 billion at its 2021 peak to approximately $25–30 billion in late 2024 and a fraction of that by mid-2026. Bloomberg separately reported the fund's value at approximately $3 billion in early August 2026, a figure that likely reflected a higher Bitcoin price at the time of that analysis. The fund is owned by BitMEX's operating entity, not by customers, and was built over time primarily from excess collateral recovered during customer liquidation events rather than from premiums paid into a segregated pool. BitMEX has not publicly disclosed any plan for the disposition of these funds following closure. According to Flashbots strategic lead Hasu, writing publicly, the fund's structure — which lacked segregated accounts, had no defined upper limit, and contained no clear protocol for excess assets — may have complicated both acquisition talks and the closure process. These structural issues were reportedly present as early as 2018. In November 2025, BitMEX reduced the fund from approximately 13,000–14,000 BTC to approximately 3,600 BTC, stating the adjustment better reflected then-current market risks.
