Verify a decision
Every moderation decision on AVOID.NET is anchored to the Solana blockchain. You don't have to trust us — you can verify cryptographically that we committed to a verdict at a specific moment and have not rewritten it.
How verification works
- We commit. When a moderator accepts/rejects a submission, we serialize the decision into deterministic UTF-8 bytes (
payload_canonical_string), hash it with SHA-256, encode the digest as base58, and write it to Solana inside an SPL Memo v2 transaction. - We store the bytes. The exact bytes we hashed are stored alongside the decision in our database. Anyone can read them and recompute the hash in any language.
- You compare three values. Database hash, your independently-recomputed hash, and the hash inside the on-chain memo. If all three match, the decision is authentic and timestamped.
The on-chain memo format is
AVOID.NET|v1|h:<b58-sha256>|d:<id>|t:<iso>Find a signature on any investigation page's decision log, or run python -m src.verify_decision --signature <sig> for a CLI check.

The protocol was co-founded by two semi-pseudonymous traders known publicly as Jez and Blurr. Jez has been identified in project-related coverage as Colin Hong, who previously held roles in quantitative research at Millennium and automated market making at Morgan Stanley, and is listed as a Venture Partner at Standard Crypto. Blurr remains fully pseudonymous; he has stated in interviews that he met Jez in New York in 2021 and that the protocol was built by only two or three people. Both founders have said they developed the initial whitepaper for the queue system in the summer of 2024, drawing on testing with blackjack and coin flips, and acknowledging inspiration from Rollbit's mathematical model.\n\nThe protocol's defining feature is its Martingaler LP architecture: rather than matching traders against one another through an order book, a single shared USDC liquidity pool acts as counterparty to every trade. Asset prices are not sourced from a multi-venue oracle aggregator but are instead read directly from Hyperliquid's HyperCore consensus layer via L1 read precompiles, specifically using the BBO mid-price — the exact midpoint between the highest bid and lowest ask on Hyperliquid's own order book. The protocol launched with zero initial LP liquidity by design, relying on trader activity — specifically losing trades — to recapitalize the pool. Losing traders receive PAPER tokens in return, which can be staked to earn protocol fee revenue in USDC.\n\nPapertrade engaged Guardian Audits for a contract security review ahead of its planned Summer 2026 launch. A limited beta was announced on May 17, 2026. The protocol's fair-launch model includes no pre-mine, no team allocation, and no venture capital token allocation. The sole mechanism for new PAPER token supply is user losses or liquidations.","heading":"Background and Protocol Design","severity":"medium","sources":[{"credibility":2,"name":"IQ Wiki — Papertrade Protocol Overview","type":"research","url":"https://iq.wiki/wiki/papertrade"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Blocmates — PaperTrade: The Perp Venue That Pays for Losses","type":"research","url":"https://www.blocmates.com/articles/papertrade-the-perp-venue-that-pays-for-losses"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Bankless / Yahoo Finance — What to Know About Papertrade's Launch","type":"news_article","url":"https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/crypto/articles/know-papertrades-launch-182605776.html"},{"credibility":2,"name":"KuCoin News — Papertrade Launches 1000x Leverage Perpetual Exchange Without Liquidity Pools","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.kucoin.com/news/flash/papertrade-launches-1000x-leverage-perpetual-exchange-without-liquidity-pools"},{"credibility":2,"name":"CypherHunter — Colin Hong Profile","type":"other","url":"https://www.cypherhunter.com/en/p/izebel-eth/"}]},{"content":"Within approximately eight hours of the protocol going live on October 10, 2026, a single wallet allegedly extracted $1.28 million from Papertrade's liquidity pool through what multiple outlets have characterized as an oracle manipulation strategy, though the platform itself has disputed the characterization that this constitutes an oracle exploit.\n\nAccording to reporting by The Block, Crypto Briefing, Phemex, and crypto.news, the wallet — associated with a Hyperliquid trader with a verified lifetime profit-and-loss history exceeding $13 million — executed 305 trades, winning 296 of them, for a 97% win rate. The core technique, as reconstructed by analysts, involved two coordinated steps repeated across those trades: (1) purchasing approximately 6,060 ETH on Hyperliquid's spot market to push ETH's BBO mid-price upward by roughly $3, equivalent to approximately 0.12%, while simultaneously holding a 1000x leveraged long position on Papertrade; and (2) then selling approximately 6,590 ETH on Hyperliquid to push the price downward, while holding a short position on Papertrade. Because Papertrade uses Hyperliquid's BBO mid-price as its sole pricing oracle and offers leverage up to 1000x, a 0.12% move in the underlying feed translates to a 120% gain on the leveraged position. The trader reportedly spent approximately $52,000 in fees while generating peak gains of $1.73 million, before losing approximately $450,000 when 30 remaining short positions were liquidated simultaneously, leaving a net profit of approximately $1.28 million.\n\nThe allegation that this constituted manipulation was first raised publicly on X by user Boblob (@Dr_bobo54) and amplified by trader 'Rune' on October 11, 2026. Crypto.news noted that, as of the time of initial reporting, the alleged manipulation had not been independently verified and that no confirmed transaction analysis had established the wallet operators' identities or confirmed that their trades generated profits specifically through price manipulation rather than trading skill. Papertrade's house pool (the Martingaler LP) was reported to hold approximately $3.14 million to $3.15 million at the time of initial reporting, representing a limited buffer against sustained adversarial extraction. The protocol's design specifies that when the pool falls below $2 million, new PAPER tokens are minted at a dilutive rate of 100 PAPER per $1 of LP deficit, effectively shifting losses onto token holders.","heading":"Oracle Manipulation Incident — October 10, 2026","severity":"critical","sources":[{"credibility":1,"name":"The Block — Trader nets $1.28 million on new 1,000x exchange Papertrade by moving Hyperliquid's ETH prices","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.theblock.co/news/defi/2026-10-11-trader-nets-1-28-million-on-new-1000x-exchange-papertrade-by-moving-hyperliquids-eth-prices-418239"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Crypto Briefing — Papertrade faces oracle manipulation allegation as its loss-funded pool shows $3M","type":"news_article","url":"https://cryptobriefing.com/papertrade-oracle-manipulation-allegation-pool/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Crypto Briefing — Trader nets over $1M on Papertrade's launch, then loses $450K","type":"news_article","url":"https://cryptobriefing.com/trader-papertrade-launch-1m-profit-450k-loss/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"crypto.news — Hyperliquid sees $20M ETH trades: Was Papertrade exploited?","type":"news_article","url":"https://crypto.news/hyperliquid-eth-trades-raise-concerns-was-papertrade-exploited/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Phemex — Papertrade Exploited for $1.28M: 1000x Leverage Model Risks","type":"news_article","url":"https://phemex.com/news/article/papertrade-exploited-for-128m-on-launch-day-as-1000x-leverage-model-faces-scrutiny-99518"},{"credibility":2,"name":"KuCoin News — Papertrade launch exploited for $1.28M in 8 hours using 1000x leverage","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.kucoin.com/news/flash/papertrade-launch-exploited-for-1-28m-in-8-hours-using-1000x-leverage"},{"credibility":2,"name":"The Defiant — Papertrade Faces Oracle-Manipulation Allegation as House Pool Shows $3.14 Million","type":"news_article","url":"https://thedefiant.io/news/defi/papertrade-faces-oracle-manipulation-allegation-as-house-pool-shows-3-14-million"},{"credibility":2,"name":"TokenPost — Papertrade Loses $1.28 Million in First-Day ETH Price Attack","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.tokenpost.com/news/technology/29990"}]},{"content":"The core technical vulnerability highlighted by the incident is Papertrade's reliance on a single external price source — Hyperliquid's BBO mid-price — as its sole oracle. Industry analysts and crypto media have noted that this architecture is atypical for a venue offering extreme leverage: conventional perpetual exchanges use multi-source aggregated oracle feeds (such as Chainlink, Pyth, or Hyperliquid's own separate oracle price, which differs from the BBO mid-price) specifically to resist the kind of price feed manipulation demonstrated in this incident.\n\nAt 1000x leverage, a price movement of as little as 0.1% — well within the reach of a single large-block trade on Hyperliquid — is sufficient to generate a 100% return on a leveraged position or trigger immediate liquidation. Crypto Briefing noted that an alternative approach would have been to adopt Hyperliquid's own separate oracle price feed rather than the live BBO mid-price, as the former incorporates additional manipulation resistance. The IQ Wiki profile of the protocol and the Blocmates research piece, both published prior to or around the launch, identified the BBO mid-price reliance as a structural risk factor without characterizing it as negligent.\n\nThe question of whether the single-oracle design was an intentional trade-off, a gross oversight, or a design decision made acceptable by the planned OI caps has not been adjudicated by any court, regulator, or independent security audit published publicly as of October 12, 2026. The Guardian Audits engagement, announced in May 2026, does not appear to have produced a publicly available audit report addressing oracle risk at the time of writing.","heading":"Oracle Architecture and Single-Source Price Feed Risk","severity":"high","sources":[{"credibility":2,"name":"Crypto Briefing — Papertrade faces oracle manipulation allegation as its loss-funded pool shows $3M","type":"news_article","url":"https://cryptobriefing.com/papertrade-oracle-manipulation-allegation-pool/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Crypto Briefing — Trader nets over $1M on Papertrade's launch, then loses $450K","type":"news_article","url":"https://cryptobriefing.com/trader-papertrade-launch-1m-profit-450k-loss/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"IQ Wiki — Papertrade","type":"research","url":"https://iq.wiki/wiki/papertrade"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Blocmates — PaperTrade: The Perp Venue That Pays for Losses","type":"research","url":"https://www.blocmates.com/articles/papertrade-the-perp-venue-that-pays-for-losses"}]},{"content":"On October 11, 2026, Papertrade published a statement disputing that the manipulation was caused by a design flaw. According to The Defiant and Panews, the team stated that the overnight attempts to manipulate Bitcoin and Ether prices were possible because it had deliberately set open interest caps loosely in order to accommodate heavy launch-day demand, and that this was not an oversight in a mechanism that took six months to design. As traffic normalized, the team announced it had begun tightening open interest limits at both the on-chain level and through transaction relayers to reduce the room for price manipulation. These measures were confirmed by a second Defiant article published on October 11, 2026.\n\nThe team also acknowledged that one of the traders who profited subsequently lost a significant portion of those gains — approximately $450,000 — through continued trading on the platform, with 30 short positions liquidated simultaneously. The team stated that some users voluntarily opted to cancel trades it characterized as manipulated in exchange for farmed PAPER tokens, though this arrangement appeared to apply to a small subset of affected trades rather than representing a broad restitution program. No public announcement of a formal restitution fund or full user compensation has been identified as of October 12, 2026.\n\nThe team did not dispute that the single-oracle BBO design creates a known manipulation surface; rather, it argued that adequate OI caps would have made such attacks economically impractical.","heading":"Team Response and Remediation","severity":"high","sources":[{"credibility":2,"name":"The Defiant — Papertrade Says It Is Tightening Trading Limits After Manipulation Allegations","type":"news_article","url":"https://thedefiant.io/news/defi/papertrade-says-it-is-tightening-trading-limits-after-manipulation-allegations"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Panews — PaperTrade responds to fairness and manipulation concerns","type":"news_article","url":"https://panews.io/articles/01a12ba6-1c64-71cd-a597-488f2d1091aa"},{"credibility":2,"name":"CryptoNomist — Papertrade tightens its trading limits after alleged price manipulation","type":"news_article","url":"https://en.cryptonomist.ch/2026/10/11/papertrade-trading-limits/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Crypto Briefing — Trader nets over $1M on Papertrade's launch, then loses $450K","type":"news_article","url":"https://cryptobriefing.com/trader-papertrade-launch-1m-profit-450k-loss/"}]},{"content":"Papertrade's launch generated extraordinary initial activity: approximately 11,473 addresses pre-deposited $137–138 million before trading opened, and the platform logged $14.4 billion in notional volume and $3 billion in Bitcoin open interest within minutes of going live on October 10, 2026, according to Crypto Briefing and KuCoin News.\n\nHowever, activity declined sharply over the following 48 hours. Open interest fell approximately 60% in the first 12 hours to $1.3 billion, and subsequently collapsed to approximately $510 million as of October 12, representing a roughly 85% decline from peak. The protocol's model — where stakers receive protocol revenue from trader losses — distributed over $10 million in USDC to stakers in the opening hours; an earlier high-water mark estimate put staker rewards at $25 million distributed against estimated net losses of $18–30 million across the early period.\n\nThe rapid exodus of open interest was attributed by multiple outlets to a combination of airdrop farmers exiting after accumulating PAPER tokens, professional traders extracting value through high-frequency activity, and the manipulation allegations creating reputational uncertainty around the venue.","heading":"Post-Launch Protocol Health and Open Interest Collapse","severity":"high","sources":[{"credibility":2,"name":"TokenPost — Papertrade Open Interest Falls 60% in 12 Hours to $1.3 Billion","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.tokenpost.com/news/investing/29834"},{"credibility":2,"name":"TokenPost — Papertrade Loses 93.7% of Open Interest After Launch Weekend","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.tokenpost.com/news/investing/29933"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Bitcoin.com News — Papertrade's Wild Weekend Ends With 93.7% Open Interest Wipeout","type":"news_article","url":"https://news.bitcoin.com/featured/papertrades-wild-weekend-ends-with-93-7-open-interest-wipeout/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"KuCoin News — Papertrade unleveraged margin drops to $6.4M, a 70% decline in 24 hours","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.kucoin.com/news/flash/papertrade-unleveraged-margin-falls-to-6-4m-70-drop-in-24-hours"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Crypto Briefing — Papertrade draws $3B in Bitcoin open interest as on-chain perps exchange launches","type":"news_article","url":"https://cryptobriefing.com/papertrade-3b-open-interest-launch/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"TokenPost — Papertrade Trader Losses Reach $32.4 Million After Two Days","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.tokenpost.com/news/investing/30235"}]},{"content":"Independent analysts have identified several structural risks in the Martingaler LP model beyond the oracle issue. The Blocmates research piece and IQ Wiki both note that the protocol's solvency depends on a continuous influx of losing traders to fund winning traders' payouts, and that winning traders who cannot be immediately paid are placed in a first-in-first-out queue — meaning the protocol can operate in a state of deferred insolvency. When the LP pool falls below $2 million, the protocol responds by minting PAPER tokens at 100 per $1 of LP deficit, which shifts losses onto token holders rather than resolving the underlying shortfall.\n\nAnalysts have drawn comparisons to a 'bucket shop' — a 100-year-old betting mechanism — and noted that extended winning streaks, while unlikely in any individual instance, become mathematically certain given sufficient trading volume. The protocol's own whitepaper acknowledges this dynamic, characterizing the Martingaler LP as a bootstrapping mechanism rather than a fully capitalized house. The team has stated that the protocol's design is intended to operate in adversarial environments through economic incentives rather than capital reserves.\n\nNo regulatory action against Papertrade has been identified by AVOID.NET's research as of October 12, 2026.
