Verify a decision
Every moderation decision on AVOID.NET is anchored to the Solana blockchain. You don't have to trust us — you can verify cryptographically that we committed to a verdict at a specific moment and have not rewritten it.
How verification works
- We commit. When a moderator accepts/rejects a submission, we serialize the decision into deterministic UTF-8 bytes (
payload_canonical_string), hash it with SHA-256, encode the digest as base58, and write it to Solana inside an SPL Memo v2 transaction. - We store the bytes. The exact bytes we hashed are stored alongside the decision in our database. Anyone can read them and recompute the hash in any language.
- You compare three values. Database hash, your independently-recomputed hash, and the hash inside the on-chain memo. If all three match, the decision is authentic and timestamped.
The on-chain memo format is
AVOID.NET|v1|h:<b58-sha256>|d:<id>|t:<iso>Find a signature on any investigation page's decision log, or run python -m src.verify_decision --signature <sig> for a CLI check.

This figure represents roughly 20% of the coin's total supply at the time of the incident, against a protocol-defined maximum supply cap of 200 million ARRR. The exploit was traced to a vulnerability in the transparent accounting layer of Ironwood's turnstile mechanism — a supply-verification component introduced as part of the Ironwood hard fork that activated on October 3, 2026, approximately 11 days before the incident. The privacy layer underpinning shielded transactions (zk-SNARKs and Sapling) was not reported to be compromised, nor were notary keys associated with the delayed Proof of Work (dPoW) security layer. The attacker transferred the newly minted tokens into the Sapling shielded pool, where balances and transaction flows are cryptographically obscured, limiting on-chain tracing. No attacker identity has been publicly identified.","heading":"Incident Overview","severity":"critical","sources":[{"credibility":2,"name":"Pirate Chain exploit mints around 39.8 million ARRR, team proposes rollback — Crypto Briefing","type":"news_article","url":"https://cryptobriefing.com/pirate-chain-exploit-arrr-rollback/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Pirate Chain Exploit Mints 39.8M ARRR, Rollback Plan Dropped — CryptoTimes","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.cryptotimes.io/2026/10/16/pirate-chain-exploit-mints-39-8m-arrr-rollback-plan-dropped/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Pirate Chain Discloses Progress in Exploit Investigation: 39.8M ARRR Illegally Minted — KuCoin News","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.kucoin.com/news/flash/pirate-chain-discloses-progress-in-exploit-investigation-39-8m-arrr-illegally-minted"}]},{"content":"The Ironwood upgrade moved Pirate Chain from the Sapling shielded pool — based on an earlier zk-SNARK construction requiring a trusted setup ceremony — to a new shielded pool built on Halo2, a proving system that eliminates the need for a trusted setup. As part of this migration, a turnstile mechanism was introduced to manage supply accounting: it is responsible for verifying that coins entering the new pool are consistent with the existing supply and that no new coins are created in the process. According to multiple news sources citing the project's own disclosures, two separate validation failures in this transparent accounting layer were exploited: (1) a bypass of the issuance check — the control that prevents unauthorized coin creation — and (2) incorrect parsing of output scripts governing transaction instructions. These two failures in combination allowed the attacker to mint tokens outside the protocol's inflation schedule without triggering the verification mechanisms that should have blocked such activity. The core cryptographic components of Pirate Chain's shielded transactions were not reported to be involved in or compromised by the exploit.","heading":"Technical Details: Ironwood Upgrade and Turnstile Vulnerability","severity":"critical","sources":[{"credibility":2,"name":"Pirate Chain Rolls Back Blockchain After Ironwood Turnstile Exploit — CryptoTimes","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.cryptotimes.io/2026/10/15/pirate-chain-rolls-back-blockchain-after-ironwood-turnstile-exploit/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Pirate Chain Exploit: Millions of New ARRR Created, Where Did They Go? — CoinGabbar","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.coingabbar.com/en/pirate-chain-exploit-arrr-new-coins-hidden-pool-recovery-plan"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Action Required: Update Your Pirate Chain Wallet Before the September 19 Deadline — PirateChain.com","type":"official","url":"https://piratechain.com/blog/action-required-update-your-pirate-chain-wallet-before-the-september-19-deadline/"}]},{"content":"According to Pirate Chain's own statements as reported by multiple outlets, the approximately 39.8 million minted ARRR were moved immediately into the Sapling shielded privacy pool following their creation. The Sapling pool uses zk-SNARK cryptographic proofs to obscure sender identity, receiver identity, and transaction amounts. Pirate Chain acknowledged that the subsequent movement of these funds within the shielded pool cannot be fully traced. One exchange, NonKYC — a platform that does not require identity verification — identified suspicious deposits linked to the exploit activity, restricted the associated account, and blocked withdrawals on those funds. No other exchange or on-chain analytics firm has publicly reported successfully identifying or freezing additional portions of the exploited funds. The privacy architecture that is Pirate Chain's primary value proposition has, in this instance, also impeded recovery efforts.","heading":"Funds Movement and Traceability","severity":"high","sources":[{"credibility":2,"name":"Pirate Chain Exploit: Millions of New ARRR Created, Where Did They Go? — CoinGabbar","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.coingabbar.com/en/pirate-chain-exploit-arrr-new-coins-hidden-pool-recovery-plan"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Pirate Chain Exploit Mints 39.8M ARRR, Rollback Plan Dropped — CryptoTimes","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.cryptotimes.io/2026/10/16/pirate-chain-exploit-mints-39-8m-arrr-rollback-plan-dropped/"}]},{"content":"Pirate Chain publicly disclosed the incident on October 15, 2026, at 02:20 UTC via its official X (formerly Twitter) account. The development team initially announced an emergency blockchain rollback to October 14, 2026, at 20:00 UTC — the point immediately preceding the exploit — and instructed users to refrain from sending or receiving funds and advised exchanges and mining pools to voluntarily suspend operations. MEXC and other exchanges were reported to have suspended ARRR deposits and withdrawals in response. dPoW notary operators also paused notarizations as a precautionary measure. However, within hours of the initial rollback announcement, the team reversed course, stating that the network's decentralized structure means the project cannot unilaterally freeze the network or roll back blockchain history. The team indicated that a post-mortem report and protocol upgrade plan would follow, but as of October 16, 2026, no technical post-mortem had been published. The inability to execute a rollback highlights a structural tension in decentralized privacy coin networks: the same design properties that prevent centralized censorship also constrain emergency responses.","heading":"Team Response and Rollback Decision","severity":"high","sources":[{"credibility":2,"name":"Pirate Chain Exploit Mints 39.8M ARRR, Rollback Plan Dropped — CryptoTimes","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.cryptotimes.io/2026/10/16/pirate-chain-exploit-mints-39-8m-arrr-rollback-plan-dropped/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Pirate Chain Rolls Back Blockchain After Ironwood Exploit — CoinTrust","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.cointrust.com/market-news/pirate-chain-rolls-back-blockchain-after-ironwood-exploit"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Pirate Chain Announces Blockchain Rollback After Ironwood Upgrade Exploit — Blockfence","type":"news_article","url":"https://blockfence.io/pirate-chain-announces-blockchain-rollback-after-ironwood-upgrade-exploit/"}]},{"content":"ARRR traded at approximately $0.2596 on October 16, 2026, reflecting a decline of approximately 6.5% over the 24 hours following the incident disclosure. Market capitalization at that price was approximately $50.9 million, with a fully diluted valuation of approximately $51.9 million. Prior to the exploit announcement, on the morning of October 15, ARRR traded in the $0.27–$0.28 range. Trading volume remained thin and no sharp price collapse followed the announcement, which may partly reflect the illiquid nature of the ARRR market. The token remained approximately 98% below its all-time high from April 2021. The 20% supply inflation caused by the unauthorized minting has a direct dilutive effect on existing holders, independent of the token's spot price movement.","heading":"Market Impact","severity":"medium","sources":[{"credibility":2,"name":"Pirate Chain Exploit Mints 39.8M ARRR, Rollback Plan Dropped — CryptoTimes","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.cryptotimes.io/2026/10/16/pirate-chain-exploit-mints-39-8m-arrr-rollback-plan-dropped/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Pirate Chain Rolls Back Blockchain After Ironwood Exploit — CoinTrust","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.cointrust.com/market-news/pirate-chain-rolls-back-blockchain-after-ironwood-exploit"}]},{"content":"Pirate Chain (ticker: ARRR) is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency launched in 2018. It mandates that all transactions use shielded addresses backed by zk-SNARK cryptographic proofs, unlike Zcash, from which it forks, where transparent transactions are optional. Pirate Chain also employs delayed Proof of Work (dPoW), a security mechanism that notarizes the ARRR chain onto a more established blockchain to provide additional protection against 51% attacks. The Ironwood upgrade, activated on October 3, 2026, represented a significant protocol migration from the Sapling shielded pool — which required a trusted setup ceremony — to a Halo2-based pool, removing the trusted setup requirement. Halo2 is a proving system that allows recursive zk-SNARKs without a trusted setup. The turnstile mechanism introduced in Ironwood was intended to ensure supply continuity during the migration from the old pool to the new one. It is this turnstile component that contained the validation flaw subsequently exploited.","heading":"Background: Pirate Chain and Ironwood Upgrade","severity":"low","sources":[{"credibility":3,"name":"Pirate Chain (ARRR) — Bitcoin Wiki","type":"other","url":"https://bitcoinwiki.org/wiki/PirateChain"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Pirate Chain GitHub Repository","type":"official","url":"https://github.com/PirateNetwork/pirate"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Pirate Chain Rolls Back Blockchain After Ironwood Turnstile Exploit — CryptoTimes","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.cryptotimes.io/2026/10/15/pirate-chain-rolls-back-blockchain-after-ironwood-turnstile-exploit/"}]},{"content":"As of October 16, 2026, several material facts remain unresolved. No technical post-mortem has been published by the Pirate Chain development team. The identity of the attacker or attackers is unknown.
