Verify a decision

Every moderation decision on AVOID.NET is anchored to the Solana blockchain. You don't have to trust us — you can verify cryptographically that we committed to a verdict at a specific moment and have not rewritten it.

How verification works

  1. We commit. When a moderator accepts/rejects a submission, we serialize the decision into deterministic UTF-8 bytes (payload_canonical_string), hash it with SHA-256, encode the digest as base58, and write it to Solana inside an SPL Memo v2 transaction.
  2. We store the bytes. The exact bytes we hashed are stored alongside the decision in our database. Anyone can read them and recompute the hash in any language.
  3. You compare three values. Database hash, your independently-recomputed hash, and the hash inside the on-chain memo. If all three match, the decision is authentic and timestamped.
The on-chain memo format is AVOID.NET|v1|h:<b58-sha256>|d:<id>|t:<iso>

Find a signature on any investigation page's decision log, or run python -m src.verify_decision --signature <sig> for a CLI check.

Targeted sectors included healthcare, cybersecurity, retail, manufacturing, aerospace, energy, financial services, defense engineering, and government technology. The overseas workers used virtual private networks and proxy infrastructure to appear as U.S.-based employees, while physically routing their work through employer-issued laptops maintained at American residential addresses. Ten additional defendants located in China were also charged: Sun Sheng Ming, Pei Li Guang, Weng Shou Cheng, Han Guo Bin, Wang Jian Jun, Sheng Zhang Kun, Zhang Wei Ping, Zhang Li Ping, Yu Yang, and Jin Long. Two further defendants have sealed identities. A third U.S. person, Trey Michael Nolte of Ohio, is named as a co-conspirator but was not charged in this indictment; Nolte allegedly maintained approximately two dozen company laptops online, installed remote-access software on them, and moved more than $320,000 through accounts opened under false names. Approximately 100 of the 187 seized laptops and devices came from North Texas locations. Additional searches were conducted in Louisiana, Nevada, Kentucky, and Ohio. KVM (keyboard, video, mouse) switching devices were also seized, consistent with facilitators managing multiple employer-issued machines simultaneously. The indictment was unsealed on October 13, 2026. At a press conference that day, U.S. Attorney Ryan Raybould stated: 'It's very hard to claim you didn't know what you were doing when you're hosting 30, 40, 50 laptops in your house.' FBI Special Agent Joseph Rothrock urged U.S. employers to use E-Verify and conduct thorough due diligence on remote hires. Prosecutors alleged that on July 8, 2024, a co-conspirator discussed using spreadsheets to manage transfers between bank accounts and virtual currencies before sending funds to another defendant. Court documents cited in reporting identify approximately 158,123 USDC and approximately 54,574 USDT traced to at least 14 worker payment addresses. A wallet beginning '0x81c4' was identified as containing seized stablecoins; forfeiture of approximately $212,700 in digital assets was granted by the court on September 3 (the court declined to grant the initially requested forfeiture of more than $7.74 million in digital assets, citing inadequate identification of additional assets). In the broader DPRK IT worker ecosystem, the U.S. Treasury's OFAC designated six individuals and two entities in March 2026 for facilitating IT worker schemes estimated to have generated nearly $800 million in 2024, adding 21 cryptocurrency addresses to the Specially Designated Nationals list.
