Verify a decision

Every moderation decision on AVOID.NET is anchored to the Solana blockchain. You don't have to trust us — you can verify cryptographically that we committed to a verdict at a specific moment and have not rewritten it.

How verification works

  1. We commit. When a moderator accepts/rejects a submission, we serialize the decision into deterministic UTF-8 bytes (payload_canonical_string), hash it with SHA-256, encode the digest as base58, and write it to Solana inside an SPL Memo v2 transaction.
  2. We store the bytes. The exact bytes we hashed are stored alongside the decision in our database. Anyone can read them and recompute the hash in any language.
  3. You compare three values. Database hash, your independently-recomputed hash, and the hash inside the on-chain memo. If all three match, the decision is authentic and timestamped.
The on-chain memo format is AVOID.NET|v1|h:<b58-sha256>|d:<id>|t:<iso>

Find a signature on any investigation page's decision log, or run python -m src.verify_decision --signature <sig> for a CLI check.

As a nonprofit, the Foundation holds a substantial ETH treasury — estimated at approximately 102,400 ETH (roughly $210 million) across 14 addresses as of early 2026 — which it uses to fund protocol research, client teams, grants, and ecosystem development. Simultaneously, the Foundation disclosed a 40% reduction in its 2026 operating budget and the closure of its Privacy and Scaling Explorations (PSE) unit — the Foundation's dedicated ZK (zero-knowledge) cryptography research lab, which had been responsible for projects including PlasmaFold, MACI (a private on-chain voting system), Semaphore, and private RPC research. The Foundation announced a reorganization into five work clusters: protocol, access, user, community, and institutional layers. Departing employees were offered severance of at least one month per year of service, plus transition grants and ecosystem job placement support. The Foundation described the outcome as leaving the organization 'leaner and more focused.' Vitalik Buterin framed the cuts as part of a deliberate long-term transition from spending approximately 15% of the EF's treasury annually to a target of roughly 5% per year by 2030. Nine high-profile figures departed the Ethereum Foundation between January and June 2026. Co-executive director Tomasz Stanczak stepped down in February 2026. Co-executive director Hsiao-Wei Wang resigned effective June 18, 2026 — five days before the restructuring announcement — citing a sabbatical that gave her time to 'reflect on priorities and future plans.' Bastian Aue assumed an expanded interim operational role following these two departures. Former researcher Dankrad Feist publicly attributed the talent drain to leadership flaws rather than ideological disagreements, stating that 'the core issue lies with the foundation's management, not its strategic priorities.' Five of the nine senior departures reportedly occurred in May 2026 alone. The concentrated pace of senior exits prompted public debate about transparency and governance within the Ethereum community.","heading":"Leadership Exodus: Nine Senior Departures Since January 2026","severity":"high","sources":[{"credibility":1,"name":"Ethereum Foundation loses another key leader as co-executive director Hsiao-Wei Wang resigns — CoinDesk","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.coindesk.com/tech/2026/06/18/ethereum-foundation-loses-another-key-leader-as-co-executive-director-hsiao-wei-wang-resigns"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Ethereum Foundation Loses Second Co-Executive Director as Hsiao-Wei Wang Steps Down — The Defiant","type":"news_article","url":"https://thedefiant.io/news/people/ethereum-foundation-hsiao-wei-wang-resigns-co-executive-director"},{"credibility":1,"name":"Ethereum's identity crisis is deepening after high-profile brain drain frustrates the community — CoinDesk","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.coindesk.com/tech/2026/05/21/ethereum-s-identity-crisis-is-deepening-after-high-profile-brain-drain-frustrates-the-community"},{"credibility":1,"name":"What's happening at the EF — CoinDesk","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.coindesk.com/tech/2026/05/19/what-s-happening-at-the-ef-ethereum-community-looking-for-answers-after-high-profile-departures"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Ethereum Foundation Leadership Crisis: 8 Executives Resign in 5 Months — CryptoRank","type":"news_article","url":"https://cryptorank.io/news/feed/b9da7-ethereum-foundation-leadership-crisis-executive-resignations"}]},{"content":"Former Ethereum Foundation member Trent Van Epps, who served with the Foundation from May 2021 to April 2026 and coordinated funding for Ethereum's core developers, issued a public warning that the network's core development ecosystem faces a 'slow-burning funding crisis within the next 3-9 months.' Van Epps estimated that sustaining Ethereum's core development ecosystem — encompassing over 10 client teams plus research and coordination functions — costs approximately $30 million annually. He identified two simultaneous pressures: first, the Foundation's long-term treasury reduction from 15% to 5% annual spend; and second, the expiration in April 2026 of the Client Incentive Program (CIP), a four-year staking-reward-based initiative formally announced by the Ethereum Foundation in December 2021 that funded Ethereum's execution and consensus client teams. No announced successor program for the CIP was in place at the time of his warning. Van Epps cautioned that insufficient resources risk losing experienced developers and hindering progress on critical challenges including quantum computing resistance and network scaling. He separately leads Protocol Guild, which has distributed approximately $40 million to Ethereum core developers over four years, but acknowledged this alone cannot replace broader ecosystem funding mechanisms. Van Epps described the structural challenge as a 'free rider' problem: firms benefiting from shared infrastructure without contributing to its maintenance.","heading":"Core Development Funding Risk: Trent Van Epps Warning","severity":"high","sources":[{"credibility":1,"name":"Former Ethereum Foundation leader warns of funding gap as governance shifts — CoinDesk","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2026/06/26/former-ethereum-foundation-leader-warns-of-funding-gap-as-governance-shifts"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Ex-Ethereum Foundation Lead Warns Core Devs Could Run Short of Funding in 3-9 Months — Bitcoin.com News","type":"news_article","url":"https://news.bitcoin.com/ethereum-core-developer-funding-crisis-warning/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Ethereum Core Development Funds Could Run Dry Within 3-9 Months, Warns Former Foundation Member — ZyCrypto","type":"news_article","url":"https://zycrypto.com/ethereum-core-development-funds-could-run-dry-within-3-9-months-warns-former-foundation-member/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Ethereum Core Development Funding Could Face Pressure Within Months — TradingView / NewsBTC","type":"news_article","url":"https://www.tradingview.com/news/newsbtc:c83b7de47094b:0-ethereum-core-development-funding-could-face-pressure-within-months-former-ef-coordinator-warns/"}]},{"content":"The Ethereum Foundation has faced mounting governance and culture criticism in 2026, coinciding with and partly preceding the June restructuring. A central dispute concerns the Foundation's strategic mandate: in March 2026, the Foundation published a revised 'Mandate' repositioning itself as a steward of Ethereum rather than a governing authority, emphasizing a 'subtraction philosophy' of intentionally reducing central authority. Critics argue the Foundation had become misaligned with the economic interests of the network it supports, allegedly funding low-impact projects while core protocol work was underfunded. Former researcher Dankrad Feist proposed that 'the community create an organization that's economically aligned with Ethereum and accountable to it.' Anonymous community members alleged that the Foundation was 'completely out of touch,' funding peripheral initiatives while neglecting higher-priority protocol work. These allegations are sourced primarily from community forums and social media and should be treated as low-confidence without corroboration from primary sources. CoinDesk reported a broader lack of transparency about internal decision-making, with community members demanding more visibility into Foundation governance.","heading":"Governance and Culture Tensions","severity":"medium","sources":[{"credibility":2,"name":"Ethereum Foundation Returns to Spotlight Amid Governance and Culture Tensions — CryptoNews","type":"news_article","url":"https://cryptonews.com/news/ethereum-foundation-governance-culture-tensions/"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Ethereum Foundation Leadership Exodus: Can ETH Governance Risk Become a Price Narrative? — CryptoDaily","type":"news_article","url":"https://cryptodaily.co.uk/2026/06/ethereum-foundation-exodus-governance-risk"},{"credibility":2,"name":"Ethereum Foundation faces mounting criticism over financial management and funding strategy — CryptoRank","type":"news_article","url":"https://cryptorank.io/news/feed/266f7-ethereum-foundation-funding-criticism"}]},{"content":"On February 26, 2024, the Ethereum Foundation disclosed via a GitHub repository commit that it had 'received a voluntary enquiry from a state authority that included a requirement for confidentiality.' The Foundation removed its warrant canary from its website following this disclosure. Fortune reported in March 2024 that the SEC was investigating companies that had dealings with the Ethereum Foundation, with the probe focused on Ethereum's September 2022 transition from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake consensus — a change that some regulators argued could make ETH a security. ETH dropped approximately 6% following the initial disclosure. The outcome and resolution of the investigation have not been publicly disclosed as of mid-2026, due to the confidentiality requirement. Notably, on May 23, 2024, the SEC approved 19b-4 filings for eight spot Ethereum ETPs, which many observers interpreted as a de facto acknowledgment that ETH was not classified as a security by the agency at that time. ETHLabs is backed by BitMine Immersion Technologies (NYSE: BMNR), SharpLink (NASDAQ: SBET), and Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin, among other institutional ETH holders. ETHLabs' initial focus areas include faster transaction settlement, expanding Ethereum's capacity, and improving infrastructure for institutions issuing tokenized assets and stablecoins on-chain. Proponents describe the emergence of ETHLabs as a natural evolution toward a 'multi-node' development model in which independent organizations share responsibility for advancing the network. Critics note potential overlap with the Ethereum Foundation and the risk of fragmenting talent and resources. ETHLabs stated its research agenda would remain independent of its funders through an external grants administration process. The Foundation's annual operating expenses had been approximately $100 million, representing roughly 15% of treasury assets. The June 2026 restructuring targets reducing this drawdown to approximately 5% by 2030 — a reduction that, at current treasury levels, would represent a long-term annual operating budget of approximately $10-15 million.
