{"investigation":{"slug":"socket-protocol","entity_name":"Socket Protocol","trust_score":58,"severity_base":null,"score_modifier":0,"confidence":0.82,"status":"published","content_type":"investigation","summary":"Socket Protocol (also marketed through its consumer product Bungee Exchange) is a cross-chain interoperability and liquidity-routing protocol founded in 2021 by Vaibhav Chellani and Rishabh Khurana. On 16 January 2024 a newly added route module in its SocketGateway contract, which used unvalidated user-supplied calldata, was exploited, draining approximately $3.3 million from wallets that had granted token approvals to the gateway. Socket recovered 1,032 ETH (about $2.3 million) from the attacker and committed to cover the remaining roughly $1.1 million itself; the protocol resumed operations the next day and was reported as operational in April 2026.","sections":[{"content":"On 16 January 2024, at approximately 19:03 UTC, an attacker exploited a vulnerability in a newly deployed route module within Socket Protocol's SocketGateway aggregator contract on Ethereum Mainnet. The vulnerable module, a WrappedTokenSwapperImpl contract, had been added to the gateway three days earlier (13 January) through an admin addRoute transaction. The root cause was the direct, unvalidated use of .call() with the user-supplied swapExtraData parameter inside the performAction function. This allowed the attacker to inject a transferFrom calldata payload, causing the SocketGateway contract, acting with the approval authority users had previously granted, to move tokens from victim wallets to the attacker. The attacker deployed two exploit contracts: one targeting USDC holdings and a second targeting USDT, WBTC, WETH, MATIC and DAI. The total loss was approximately $3.3 million. CertiK described the vulnerability as analogous to patterns previously seen in the Dexible and Hector Bridge incidents. Reports differ on several details. The number of affected wallets is given as approximately 230 (with 232 users later cited as compensated) in one set of reports, but as roughly 700 wallets in another, which also states that 121 wallets each lost more than $10,000. The largest single loss is given as approximately 656,000 USDC in one account and approximately $657,000 in another. The assets stolen are listed as USDC, USDT, WBTC, WETH, MATIC and DAI in one account and as ETH, MATIC, WBTC, WETH and DAI in another. Regarding timing, one account says the exploit was first flagged publicly by security researcher @speekaway at approximately 18:20 UTC and reported by PeckShield at approximately 14:26 ET, with Socket confirming the breach roughly 30 minutes later; this is not reconciled with the 19:03 UTC exploit time given elsewhere.","heading":"January 2024 Smart Contract Exploit","sources":[{"url":"https://www.halborn.com/blog/post/explained-the-socket-protocol-hack-january-2024","name":"Halborn: Explained — The Socket Protocol Hack (January 2024)","type":"research","credibility":2},{"url":"https://www.certik.com/resources/blog/socket-tech-incident-analysis","name":"CertiK: Socket Tech Incident Analysis","type":"research","credibility":2},{"url":"https://www.theblock.co/post/272986/socket-says-bungee-protocol-exploited","name":"The Block: Socket says Bungee protocol exploited, funds worth at least $3.3M appear stolen","type":"news_article","credibility":1},{"url":"https://www.coindesk.com/tech/2024/01/17/socket-bungee-restart-operations-after-apparent-33m-exploit","name":"CoinDesk: Socket, Bungee Restart Operations After Apparent $3.3M Exploit","type":"news_article","credibility":1},{"url":"https://www.web3isgoinggreat.com/?id=socket-service-and-its-bungee-bridge-suffer-3-3-million-theft","name":"web3isgoinggreat.com","type":"other","credibility":3},{"url":"https://revoke.cash/exploits/socket","name":"Revoke.cash: 2024 Socket Hack — Check If You're Affected","type":"other","credibility":2},{"url":"https://blockworks.co/news/socket-bridge-protocol-exploit","name":"Blockworks: Socket Tech security breach affects multiple dApps and wallets","type":"news_article","credibility":2}],"severity":"critical"},{"content":"Security researchers at CertiK and Halborn independently confirmed that the vulnerability resided in the performAction function of the newly deployed route contract. The function passed the caller-controlled swapExtraData parameter into a low-level .call() without sanitisation or whitelist enforcement. An additional flaw in the balance-check logic failed to account for cases in which 0 WETH was transferred, bypassing a potential guard. The Socket team later disclosed a process failure: a pre-code-review version of the module was pushed to production instead of the reviewed version, so the module was live for three days before it was exploited. Security researchers noted that a thorough audit of the new module before deployment would likely have identified the flaw. A separate account states that no evidence was found that the route underwent a formal third-party security audit before deployment, and characterises deploying new routes without audit, with broad approval scopes, as a critical operational security failure.","heading":"Vulnerability Root Cause and Deployment Process","sources":[{"url":"https://www.certik.com/resources/blog/socket-tech-incident-analysis","name":"CertiK: Socket Tech Incident Analysis","type":"research","credibility":2},{"url":"https://www.halborn.com/blog/post/explained-the-socket-protocol-hack-january-2024","name":"Halborn: Explained — The Socket Protocol Hack (January 2024)","type":"research","credibility":2},{"url":"https://blockworks.co/news/socket-bridge-protocol-exploit","name":"Blockworks: Socket Tech security breach affects multiple dApps and wallets","type":"news_article","credibility":2},{"url":"https://rivanorth.com/blog/hack-explained-socket","name":"rivanorth.com","type":"other","credibility":3}],"severity":"high"},{"content":"According to Halborn, within approximately 14 minutes of the exploit being detected Socket's team disabled the vulnerable route and deployed corrective code, halting further drainage and limiting the loss to the $3.3 million taken in two attacker transactions. The Socket admin wallet broadcast an on-chain message to the attacker inviting negotiation of a bounty and return of funds within 12 hours. Critics have noted that the distinction between Bungee and Socket is largely one of branding, since both share the same smart contract infrastructure and the Bungee interface routes transactions through SocketGateway.
