That was about 97% of the bridge's Cardano-side NIGHT reserves. Reports differ on the value, from about $10 million (CryptoTimes) to about $13 million (TokenPost, Bitcoinist, CoinDesk). According to blockchain security firm BlockSec Phalcon, as reported by CoinDesk, BeInCrypto, AMBCrypto and TokenPost, the root cause was a non-injective signed-message encoding flaw in the bridge's TreasuryCheck validator. The bridge joined 14 variable-length redeemer fields without separators or length markers, so a legitimate signature could be reused to authorize a much larger transaction. BlockSec noted: 'The same signature was reused on Cardano to extract 203,001,692 NIGHT — a ~65,000x inflation via field-boundary ambiguity.' Reports also differ on how the proceeds were sold: about 290 million of the stolen tokens were routed through new wallets and sold on Cardano DEXs before the theft was spotted according to CryptoPotato and others, while other reporting says the attacker sold about 90% of the stolen tokens through DEX swaps.
