{"investigation":{"slug":"bunny","entity_name":"Bunny Finance","trust_score":10,"severity_base":null,"score_modifier":0,"confidence":0.88,"status":"published","content_type":"investigation","summary":"PancakeBunny (Bunny Finance) was a Binance Smart Chain yield-optimizer developed by the anonymous team MOUND (Mound Inc.), which received a $1.6 million seed round led by Binance Labs in April 2021. The protocol suffered three separate exploits across 2021–2022 totaling over $127 million in losses, including a $45 million flash loan attack in May 2021, a $2.4 million polyBUNNY exploit on Polygon in July 2021, and an $80 million hack of its affiliated lending protocol Qubit Finance in January 2022. The BUNNY token has lost more than 99% of its all-time high value, the protocol transitioned to a DAO structure in early 2022, and no stolen funds from any exploit were publicly confirmed as recovered.","sections":[{"content":"On May 19–20, 2021, PancakeBunny was struck by a sophisticated flash loan attack resulting in an estimated $45 million loss. The attacker executed eight flash loans simultaneously — seven from PancakeSwap liquidity pools and one from ForTube Bank — borrowing approximately 2.3 million BNB (worth roughly $700 million) and 2.96 million USDT. These borrowed funds were deposited into the WBNB/BUSDT liquidity pool, minting 144,450 LP tokens. The attacker then executed large swap operations to manipulate reserve ratios within the pool, exploiting a vulnerability in PancakeBunny's internal price calculation mechanism. Because the protocol calculated asset prices using its own internal accounting rather than a trusted external oracle, the distorted pool ratios caused the VaultFlipToFlip reward system to issue vastly inflated BUNNY token amounts. The attacker claimed approximately 697,000 BUNNY tokens, worth roughly $1 billion at manipulated peak prices, then immediately dumped them on the open market, netting 114,631 WBNB (approximately $45 million) after repaying all flash loans. The BUNNY token price collapsed from approximately $146 to $6.17 — a decline exceeding 95% — within minutes. Protocol TVL fell from over $10 billion to approximately $1 billion. Security firm Halborn characterized the root vulnerability as a \"common mistake in DeFi\" stemming from reliance on in-protocol price calculations without flash loan manipulation protections. The exploit placed PancakeBunny in joint third position on the rekt.news leaderboard at the time. The team acknowledged the incident as an \"economic exploit\" rather than a direct smart contract breach, but the distinction offered little comfort to token holders. Notably, the protocol had received a prior audit from Haechi Labs that found no critical or major issues; that audit did not flag the oracle design flaw that enabled the attack.","heading":"May 2021 Flash Loan Attack ($45 Million)","sources":[{"url":"https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2021/05/20/flash-loan-attack-causes-defi-token-bunny-to-crash-over-95","name":"coindesk.com","type":"other","credibility":3},{"url":"https://www.halborn.com/blog/post/explained-the-pancakebunny-protocol-hack-may-2021","name":"halborn.com","type":"other","credibility":3},{"url":"https://cointelegraph.com/news/pancakebunny-tanks-96-following-200m-flash-loan-exploit","name":"cointelegraph.com","type":"other","credibility":3},{"url":"https://decrypt.co/71585/pancakebunny-defi-exploit","name":"decrypt.co","type":"other","credibility":3},{"url":"https://rekt.news/pancakebunny-rekt","name":"rekt.news","type":"other","credibility":3},{"url":"https://medium.com/amber-group/bsc-flash-loan-attack-pancakebunny-3361b6d814fd","name":"medium.com","type":"other","credibility":3}],"severity":"medium"},{"content":"On July 16, 2021 — fewer than two months after the May BSC exploit — PancakeBunny's Polygon-based fork, polyBUNNY, was hit by a nearly identical flash loan attack. The attacker made a minimal deposit of approximately $19,203 into a Bunny Vault, then deposited approximately $47.99 million directly into SushiSwap's MiniChefV2 contract. When the attacker called the withdrawAll function, the protocol incorrectly counted the large MiniChefV2 deposit as earned performance fees, triggering the minting of 2,136,672 polyBUNNY tokens that should never have been issued. The attacker converted these tokens to approximately 1,281 ETH (worth roughly $2.4 million) and repaid an Aave flash loan. The polyBUNNY token price collapsed from approximately $10 to $1.78 — a fall of roughly 82%. Notably, rekt.news reported that an identical exploit had been used against ApeRocketFi just two days prior. The similarity raised questions about why the PancakeBunny team failed to apply preventive mitigations before launching the Polygon deployment, and whether the recurrence of the same attack pattern indicated inadequate internal security review. The team announced $2.4 million in compensation to polyBUNNY holders, paid in MND tokens.","heading":"July 2021 polyBUNNY Exploit on Polygon ($2.4 Million)","sources":[{"url":"https://rekt.news/pancakebunny2-rekt","name":"rekt.news","type":"other","credibility":3},{"url":"https://cryptoslate.com/bsc-defi-app-pancakebunny-releases-post-mortem-of-2-4-million-exploit/","name":"cryptoslate.com","type":"other","credibility":3},{"url":"https://beincrypto.com/polybunny-finance-releases-2-4m-defi-attack-post-mortem-report/","name":"beincrypto.com","type":"other","credibility":3},{"url":"https://pancakebunny.medium.com/polybunny-post-mortem-compensation-42b5c35ce957","name":"pancakebunny.medium.com","type":"other","credibility":3}],"severity":"medium"},{"content":"On January 27, 2022, Qubit Finance — a BSC-based cross-chain lending protocol built and operated by the same MOUND team responsible for PancakeBunny — was exploited for approximately $80 million. The attack targeted QBridge, Qubit's cross-chain bridge connecting Ethereum to BSC. A critical logic flaw arose from a legacy deposit function that remained in the QBridge ETH contract alongside its replacement. The attacker called this legacy deposit function with malicious data that passed all of the contract's checks but attached no actual ETH. The contract's custom safeTransferFrom() implementation called the zero address using the low-level call() function rather than OpenZeppelin's SafeERC20, which would have reverted on a non-contract address. As a result, the deposit was treated as valid; the Ethereum-side QBridge emitted a Deposit event, and the BSC-side contract minted 77,162 qXETH — collateral representing bridged Ether — for the attacker without any real Ether being deposited. The attacker repeated this process to accumulate sufficient collateral, then borrowed and drained approximately 206,809 BNB from Qubit's liquidity pools. After draining the funds, the attacker routed them through the Tornado Cash mixer. Chainalysis assessed the attack as \"likely\" the work of North Korea-linked hackers based on the money laundering methodology matching known DPRK patterns; South Korea's Transnational Crime Information Center (TCIC) and National Intelligence Service (NIS) conducted a parallel tracking effort. Qubit offered the attacker a bug bounty starting at $250,000, raised to $1 million, and then to $2 million in exchange for returning the full $80 million — an offer the attacker did not accept. No funds were reported as recovered. This was the seventh-largest DeFi hack on record at the time, and represented a second catastrophic loss event for the MOUND team within eight months.","heading":"January 2022 Qubit Finance Hack ($80 Million)","sources":[{"url":"https://www.halborn.com/blog/post/explained-the-qubit-hack-january-2022","name":"halborn.com","type":"other","credibility":3},{"url":"https://cointelegraph.com/news/qubit-finance-suffers-80-million-loss-following-hack","name":"cointelegraph.com","type":"other","credibility":3},{"url":"https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2022/01/28/defi-protocol-qubit-finance-exploited-for-80m","name":"coindesk.com","type":"other","credibility":3},{"url":"https://bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-01-28/hackers-seize-80-million-from-qubit-in-lastest-defi-attack","name":"bloomberg.com","type":"other","credibility":3},{"url":"https://therecord.media/qubit-finance-platform-hacked-for-80-million-worth-of-cryptocurrency","name":"therecord.media","type":"other","credibility":3},{"url":"https://www.chainalysis.com/blog/qubit-hack-north-korea/","name":"chainalysis.com","type":"other","credibility":3},{"url":"https://beincrypto.com/qubit-finance-hacked-for-80-million-in-latest-defi-exploit/","name":"beincrypto.com","type":"other","credibility":3}],"severity":"medium"},{"content":"PancakeBunny received a smart contract audit from Haechi Labs prior to the May 2021 attack. The Haechi audit report found no critical or major issues, identifying only two minor issues. Despite this favorable assessment, the protocol's flash loan vulnerability — rooted in its reliance on internal price calculation rather than a trusted external oracle — went undetected. Following the May 2021 attack, the team announced plans to integrate Chainlink price oracles to establish externally verifiable, manipulation-resistant asset pricing. However, the July 2021 polyBUNNY exploit demonstrated that the same class of minting vulnerability had been replicated in the Polygon deployment, suggesting the security improvements were not systematically applied across all protocol deployments before launch. The Qubit Finance hack in January 2022 revealed a further failure of code lifecycle management: a deprecated legacy function was never removed from a production contract, creating the critical vulnerability that enabled the $80 million loss. Security firm Halborn noted in its post-mortem that proper smart contract auditing and change management practices would likely have identified the legacy code issue. The cumulative pattern — three exploits across two years stemming from preventable code-level and design deficiencies — represents a systemic failure of security diligence.","heading":"Security Audit Failures and Oracle Design Deficiencies","sources":[{"url":"https://pancakebunny-finance.readthedocs.io/en/main/audits.html","name":"pancakebunny-finance.readthedocs.io","type":"other","credibility":3},{"url":"https://www.halborn.com/blog/post/explained-the-pancakebunny-protocol-hack-may-2021","name":"halborn.com","type":"other","credibility":3},{"url":"https://www.halborn.com/blog/post/explained-the-qubit-hack-january-2022","name":"halborn.com","type":"other","credibility":3},{"url":"https://rekt.news/pancakebunny2-rekt","name":"rekt.news","type":"other","credibility":3}],"severity":"medium"},{"content":"PancakeBunny was developed by a group identifying itself as Team MOUND, operating under the corporate entity Mound Inc.
