According to Halborn, the root cause was failed access control in the protocol's self-listing verification logic and vault permission system. The attacker deployed a malicious token containing a deceptive transfer function and called set-approved-token on the vault, which granted the contract vault-level permissions. When swap-x-for-y executed, the vault called the fake transfer using as-contract, so the attacker's code ran with vault privileges and drained multiple liquidity pools. Sources spell the malicious token's name differently: 'ssl-labubu-672d3' on one page and 'ssl-labubi-672d3' on the other. ALEX Lab's official loss figure was approximately $8.3 million, comprising about 8.4 million STX, 21.85 sBTC, about 149,850 USDC/USDT and 2.8 WBTC (several hundred thousand dollars in stablecoins and wBTC). An estimate of total losses as high as $16.18 million, counting allegedly under-reported aBTC and ALEX token losses that were not directly reimbursed, is attributed by one page to Halborn and by the other to community estimates. Halborn noted that the exploited code lay outside the scope of prior audits. ALEX Lab suspended operations and opened an investigation, and the ALEX token fell about 45% after the announcement.
